Westbrook, Maine is a town in Androscoggin County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. Westbrook is located on the Penobscot River and is northeast of Bangor. The first permanent settler in Westbrook was John Westbrook who arrived in 1797. He built a cabin on the riverbank near what is now Main Street. In 1807, George Washington's father-in-law to marry his daughter Martha came through Westbrook on their way from Boston to visit her family. Mrs. Washington stayed with her niece and nephews for two weeks before returning home to Mount Vernon. When she got back to Mount Vernon, she took passage on a ship that sailed up the Penobscot and disembarked at Westbrook where she met John Westbrook again and they married there on September 15th of that year. They had four children: James (1808-1892), Betsey (1810-1890), William (1812-1880) and Mary Jane (1795-1871). John Westbrook died July 3rd, 1851 at the age of 82 years after long illness; he had been farming in his own right since he moved to Westbrook from Farmington in 1840. His wife survived him by over 50 years until her death on May 5th, 1916 at 101 years old also aged 82 years - she was buried next to him in their farmstead cemetery which still stands today! The house where they lived until moving into an assisted living facility in 1984 remains standing as well as many of the features introduced when they remodeled it including new roofs etcetera following their move out of town: all this evidence suggests that even though George Washington's father did not live here permanently like most contemporary residents did during those times but rather passed through frequently during his childhood visits home – like most other pioneer families – he left some lasting impressions upon these people who would later call themselves "Hillbillies."
