In Waterville, Maine, there has been coffee drinking and brewing going on since the 18th century. The first recorded mention of coffee in Waterville is from 1775 when a French trader, Jean Baptiste Bouchard, mentioned "the great pot of black beans which we drink all over this place." This was likely referring to the town's natural resources such as chestnuts and hickory trees that were used to produce coffee. Coffee began being brewed commercially in Waterville in the early 1800s. By 1820, most of the business had moved to what is nowknown as Union Street. Coffee was also smuggled into Maryland through nearby Cumberland Valley because it was easier than smuggling goods through Boston Harbor. Waterville is a town in Hancock County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,283 at the 2010 census. Waterville is one of the largest towns in Hancock County and it is part of the Bangor-Dartmouth, ME Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Waterville were the Menominee Indians. The first white person to set foot in present-day Waterville was John Fitch who arrived on July 14, 1796 with his family from Worcester, England. He built a cabin on what is now Main Street and named it "Fitch's Landing." In 1803, Captain Nathaniel Winslow established a trading post here named "Newtown" after his hometown of Newtown, Connecticut. In 1825, Waterville became a village and was incorporated as a town on January 1st of that year. It had a total population of 242 people when it became an incorporated town. On February 15th 1905 (the date which still stands as the centennial anniversary of incorporation), Waterville celebrated its 2nd anniversary with an Ottawa referendum regarding annexation by Dartmouth due to their shared proximity to New Hampshire and Interstate 95 corridor highway development potential between those two states at that time. A majority vote for annexation resulted in Waterville joining Dartmouth as a municipality; however this did not mean an end to Washington’s influence over the community going forward as both towns continued to maintain close economic ties despite their separate municipalities status until 1975 when they were merged into one city under the name “Bangor-Dartmouth” MSA

In 1876, the first electric streetlight was installed in Waterville. The first store opened in Waterville in 1886. The first post office opened in Watervaillesville on October 12th of that year. In 1897, an addition to the old courthouse building was built and used as a bank until 1978 when it became an art museum called "The Gallery".
