The 2nd Vermont Battery was raised at Waterville on February 24th 1865 and their guns were used during both World War I (1861-1918) and World War II (1939-1945). In 1942, when Waterville changed its name to Augusta, Maine after becoming an official city within Province No. 5 there was a significant donation made by Jules Thibodeau which totaled $10,000 CAD or $22500 US dollars today. This donation allowed Augusta’s incorporation as a city with all privileges granted by provincial legislature including voting rights; street names; public works projects; fire protection services; etcetera etcetera! In 1955 another large gift was made by businessman Clifford Waddell who contributed an additional $20,000 CAD or $43500 US dollars today making Augusta one among many Canadian cities now enjoying similar privileges granted by provincial legislatures! Waterville, Maine is a town in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,313 at the 2010 census. The town was named for Waterville, England. Waterville was founded in 1820 by the Loyalist refugees from Halifax and its vicinity who were driven out of Nova Scotia by the British during the American Revolution. It became a separate incorporated municipality in 1912. The town's name comes from two words: "wat" meaning place or hamlet and "ver" meaning stream or river. The first settler to arrive in what is now Waterville was Samuel Trimble on October 15, 1820. He erected a log cabin near present-day Pemaquid Avenue and located his land along Spruce Street between Hallowell and Westbrook roads which he called "Verdun." In 1821, John Upton built a store and post office here under the name of Uptonville. By 1830 there were six stores operating within walking distance of each other in downtown Waterville with an additional four or five businesses established east of Main Street between Third and Fourth Avenues where wagon traffic crossed Main Street for delivery to these stores on horseback or wagons drawn by oxen several times a day during the early 1830s when this part of town was not connected with any other part of town by road or street system. By 1840 there were twenty-one stores; six schools; one bank; one sawmill; one gristmill; ten residential buildings including three frame houses (now gone); two churches (now destroyed) A Bandstand also existed at this time as did two small livery stables used mostly for horse carriages carrying passengers to amenities like fishing trips down streams nearby! In 1912 Waterville became an incorporated municipality when it split off from Penobscot County after the state legislature voted to do so because Penobscot County had become too populous for its own government without assistance from Waterville which then numbered only 1,313 residents! The village green that still exists today still served as such until 1915 when automobiles began becoming more common so transportation necessitated building new streets closer to homes instead! Today we can enjoy many wonderful attractions within minutes' drive including some impressive architecture such as Saint James Episcopal Church dating back to 1785 on Main Street opposite Government House which features beautiful gilded trim work as well as original iron railing on both sides of its front door accentuating its2 stories high Corinthian Revival style exterior design while also having interior details such as marble flooring inside/outside doors throughout restored brick walls internal ceiling fanlights/chandeliers remain prominent features visible even today making this outstanding example(just steps away from our home!) very special indeed adding much enjoyment & excitement whenever visitors are in town especially during events like Fairest Of Allfestivals held every year at State Park across village line weekend nearest summer months bringing tens if not hundreds OF people (& their families) into central & southern Maine justforthe funofit!
