The history of the South Portland Naval Shipyard began in 1892 when a group of merchants and businessmen from nearby Portsmouth, NH, decided to build a shipyard on their property. The first navy ships were built here, including the USS Constitution (1797), USS George Washington (1801), and USS Maine (1805). In 1905, the Navy transferred ownership of the yard to the city of South Portland. Over time, South Portland has become one of the most important naval shipping yards in America. Today, it is home to over 100 warships and submarines belonging to various navies around the world. In addition to building warships for America’s navy,South Portland also produced many civilian vessels such as dredgers and ferries. In 1988, South Portland was given approval by Congress to construct a new port at its site that would allow greaterhandled maritime traffic. The project was completed in 2011 and now allows for more than 2 million metric tons of cargo per year to be unloaded at SouthPortland Naval Shipyard.

The name "South Portland" is derived from an early English settlers' name for the town: Shepherdsville. South Portland has been settled since 1785 and began to take form as a village in 1834. The first people to live near present day South Portland were the aboriginals who hunted and gathered around Lighthouse Point on modern day Brunswick Head peninsula. In 1785, surveyors named the area Shepherdsville after one of their members who had accompanied Lieutenant Colonel Peterborough on his expedition to explore the Penobscot Bay region. The first white settlers arrived here in 1787 when Captain James Sawyer and his family founded what is now known as Sawyer's Landing on Cape Elizabeth overlooking Narragansett Bay. They built a small cabin using materials brought over by shipwrecked sailors and he kept it until 1800 when he sold it to John Gorham who developed it into what is today known as Gorham’s Harbor. In 1834, South Portland was organized as a village when citizens of nearby Bath decided they wanted more control over their lives than they had at Bath Spa which was then part of Bristol Township In 1912, South Portland became an incorporated town after voters approved a proposal by Mayor George Purdy to make it easier for businesses to do business without having to go through cumbersome government regulations that often interfered with their operations
South Portland was first settled in 1636 by the Pilgrims. The town was originally called Portsmouth because of the abundance of saltpeter that was available there. In 1785, South Portland became a part of Maine and was renamed Ocean City after its location on the ocean. The town slowly lost its importance until it was destroyed by a fire in 1868. Today, South Portland is a small agricultural community with a population of around 350 people.
