South Portland, Maine is a town in southern Maine. The population was 5,671 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland-Vancouver-Hingham, ME Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now South Portland were Mayans who settled there during the time of Spanish America's rule over what is now Mexico and Central America. They built their churches, la ciudad (the city), and other structures near what is now State Street. In 1820, when Congress created the United States of America, it included parts of what are today Maine and New Hampshire as well as most of Canada. That year, Representative Caleb Stevens asked President James K. Polk if he could get rid of all these British settlements in North America and create an American territory that would include all the land from Quebec to California? Polk agreed! That territory was named for General John Sullivan who had fought against Spain in Haiti during the Spanish–American War in 1898.General Sullivan donated land to build a military academy which became known as Yale University; South Portland became part of Yale’s town limits after that university moved from New Haven to nearby Westville in 1837. During World War II South Portland served as one of two ports on Long Island for supplies coming into New York City from Allied forces fighting Nazi Germany and Japan. At its peak during World War II, SouthPortland had a population of 25000 people living mainly in downtown cores around State Street and Commercial Drive NW., with smaller populations spread throughout neighbourhoods including Cedar Hill/Downtown Crossing/East Beach/North End/West End etc.. After the war ended many residents left or were pushed out by redevelopmentprojects taking place almost everywhere within city limits while others chose not to move away because they thought they could still maintain some ties to their hometown through cultural events such as music festivals or concerts (e.g., Hennepin County Fair).
