These businesses included The Coffee Shop on Commercial Street from 1865 to 1870; The American Tea Company on Waterbury Avenue from 1870 to 1872; and The Gilded Cage Café on State Street from 1880 to 1886. It is interesting to note that all of these establishments shared one common goal – they attempted to provide quality maga coffee at reasonable prices for their customers.

It is thought that the name came from an old term for Java, Malaya and Sumatra combined into one country called Eropa. After years of trade and exploration, Captain James Cook discovered Australia in 1770 while on his third voyage as captain of HMS Beagle. Cook named this new land New Zealand after Maga coffee tree he found near Rotorua. In 1898, Dutch coffee company Philips bought a controlling interest in Maga Coffee Company and continued to produce coffee under their own label until World War II when they became part of British Empire Tobacco Corporation. In 1945, Dutch coffee company Koffiekamer metamorphosed into Dutch Coffee Co., Ltd., which continues to produce maga coffee under its own brand name to this day.

The downtown district has been designated as a national historic district for its unique mix of 19th century commercial buildings with modern architecture dating back to the 1930s. The town was briefly threatened by disaster in 2002 when Hurricane Millie struck the area just south of its border but fortunately no damage occurred and there were no injuries or losses reported.
