The Coast Guard in South Portland, Maine has been providing essential services to the community since 1917. The Coast Guard Station in South Portland was established on October 1, 1917 and is one of the oldest Coast Guard stations in New England. The station provides a variety of services including Search and Rescue, Marine Patrol,Icebreaking and Coastal Surveillance. In 1952, the station became part of the State Department’s National Defense Reserve Fleet and was used as a training ground for members of the United States Military Academy at West Point. In 1984, the station was closed due to budget cuts but reopened as a museum in 1992.
