The United States Air Force (USAF) has a long and diverse history in South Portland, Maine. The USAF's first deployment to the town occurred during World War II, when the USAAF forced the evacuation of Japanese forces from coastal towns in Maine. Since then, USAF detachments have been stationed in various parts of the world, including Okinawa and Guam. In recent years, there have also been deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq. Today, AFB South Portland is home to one of the USAF's largest air defense sectors in North America. The mission of this sector is to protect vital airspace over Canada and Mexico City from potential attack by terrorists or other militants. This year alone, AFB South Portland has played an important role in two major incidents: on November 21st, 2017 when a suicide bomber detonated an explosives-laden Boeing 757 aircraft near Toronto International Airport; and on December 14th when a fighter jet crashed into a remote mountain village near Baghdad airport after losing altitude due to engine failure. Throughout its history as an active USAF detachment located in SouthPortland, AFB South Portland has enjoyed strong relationships with its local community members. These relationships have helped make AFB South Portland one of the most welcoming military communities within reach for service members and their families. Over time, these partnerships have led to many unique opportunities for servicemen and women to interact with locals both inside and outside of their job responsibilities at AFB SouthPortland. For example, residents regularly participate in parade demonstrations or serve as honorary police officers during special events such as holiday parades or Armed Forces Day ceremonies. In addition, numerous outreach programs have been designed specifically for servicemen and women living with mental health challenges or substance abuse issues – such as support groups for deployed service members or family members who are struggling with these challenges while serving abroad. South Portland, Maine is a town in Cumberland County, Maine, United States. The population was 695 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1820 and incorporated as a village in 1868. South Portland is located on the south side of the Penobscot River and is bordered to the east by North Portland, to the north by Westbrook, and to the west by Castine. The first European settlers in what is now South Portland were families from Connecticut who settled along what is now Castle Street between 1820 and 1830. By 1840 there were about 40 people living in South Portland. In 1868, Mayor John Auld designated part of what are now both sides of State Street as "Town Park" due to its natural resources which included fresh water sources from many miles around. The townspeople voted to change their name back to "SouthPortland" on November 5th, 1968 after an effort spearheaded by then-Mayor Danvers Leach. South Portland experienced significant growth during World War II with an increase in manufacturing jobs that led to increased traffic and pollution problems downtown which were addressed through city ordinances such as a ban on headlights at night while driving and stickers warning against refuse collection near schools In early 1984 local businessman Don Heineman donated land across State Street from his property off Southwest Boulevard for use as a new shopping center called Heineman's Plaza which became one of America's most popular retail destinations with over 350 stores including Sears, JCPenney, Macy's and Nordstrom
South Portland, Maine was first settled in 1636 by Captain John Smith and his men. The town was named after the Portuguese settlement of Belem on the coast of Brazil. In 1805, South Portland became a part of Orleans County, New York. It was officially incorporated as an incorporated town in 1827. South Portland's population grew rapidly during the early 1800s with its growth in shipbuilding and other commercial activities. The town experienced a modest amount of growth until the late 1800s when it began to experience rapid population growth due to waves of immigration from Europe and other parts of the world. By 1910, South Portland had reached its peak with over 10,000 people living in the community. However, during World War I, SouthPortland saw heavy destruction as a result of German airstrikes which resulted in many homes and businesses being destroyed or damaged. After war ended and all civilian casualties had been reported, resumed efforts were made to rebuild which led to increased population growth once again through annexation by neighboring townships during the 1920s and 1930s.
