Saco is a town in Hancock County, Maine. The population was 782 at the 2010 census. Saco has been inhabited by the Saco people for over a thousand years. The first European to visit what is now Saco was Captain John Smith in 1609. He charted out the area that is now Hancock County and named it after his personal home town of Sackville, England. The first settler in what is now Saco was George Peake who built a cabin on the bank of the Penobscot River in 1793. He also founded an agricultural society which supplied goods to other settlers in the area. The early days of Saco were difficult as there was no real transportation available and goods had to be brought from miles away. However, through hard work and determination, Saco slowly began to develop into a thriving community. In 1827,Saco became one of the three townships within Hancock County when it was organized under state law. At this time,the county had only twelve townships and was very small compared to modern day Maine.
