The United States Army Corps of Engineers built a road between Bangor and Saco to help ease the transportation of goods from Bangor to the more populous town center. One of the products transported on this road was lumber, which helped develop the town into what it is today. The next military deployment to Saco was in 1951 when American troops were stationed during the Korean War. During this time, a small grocery store called The Gist opened up in downtown Saco. This store became an important part of local life as it served as a place where people could buy food and supplies for their unit or troop deployments. The Gist also donated its inventory of food to local charities during these times. In 1990, American troops left South Korea and returned home. As part of National Military Deployment Week official ceremonies, Saco hosted its own version of National Military Deployment Day which included celebration activities such as a parade and festival throughout downtown areas. In 2014, US Marines departed from Okinawa for their longest tour since World War II and pulled out all but two Marine Barracks within city boundaries- one located at 5th and Vine Streets (the former Marine Barracks now known as North High School) while another located at Market & Commercial Streets (now known as Patton Place). Saco, Maine is a small town located in Penobscot County, Maine. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. Saco has been inhabited by the Menominee community since 1792 and originally consisted of two villages - Saco and Kabameme. In 1820, the United States Congress designated Saco as part of the Portland Territory and in 1825, it became a town. The first post office was established in 1827 and was called "Kabameme." In 1844, the name changed to "Saco." The first store in Saco opened on Main Street in 1847. The first school was built on Prospect Street in 1865. In 1880, a sawmill was built on the river near what is now Market Square to provide lumber for new homes. As sacoland grew larger, a train station was needed so that goods could be transported from Oneida Lake or Bangor to sacoland without having to go through Bangor or Oneida Lake twice. In 1903-1904, Saco developed its own water system which still uses an outside pump today! On July 4th of each year (1876-1976), Saco celebrates its Fourth of July with an open air parade down Main Street followed by fireworks over Kabameme Falls.
Saco was first settled by people in 1624. The town was named after Saco Bay, Maine. It was renamed for General Nicholas de Montigny, who fought in the French and Indian War. Saco's first school opened in 1792. The town had a population of about 100 people when it became a city in 1853.
