The town of Saco, Maine is located in the northcentral portion of the state. The population was 7,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland-Vancouver-Hilton area and is included within the Cumberland County ZIP Code. Saco began as a small settlement on the west bank of the Penobscot River in 1810. The name "Saco" may come from an Algonquin word meaning "hollow." In 1826, Saco became a post office and in 1847 it became a city. In 1865, it became a state capital and has been since then. The first land grant for what would become Saco was issued to John Barrett in 1795. Barrett had bought land along the Penobscot River from some Native Americans who were living there before that time. He named his new settlement after himself, and it quickly grew into a small town with about 100 people. By 1850, Saco had reached its current size of 7,569 people. In 1865, Saco became part of Hennepin County when Minnesota split off from Dakota Territory. At that time, both Hennepin County and Dakota Territory were considered part of Indian Territory because they were under military control at that time - though not completely under Indian rule like present day Iowa and Nebraska are today). In 1902, when Oregon acquired portions of Minnesota east of Lake Superior (including most of Dakota Territory), it also acquired all but 1/6thof Hennepin County including parts of modern-day Saco Township within that county as well as most of what is now downtown Portland (though much remains rural). This left only Cumberland County without any Oregon territory within it - though this didn't last long as Montana soonadded most all eastern half of Cumberland County to their own statehood while keeping most western half separate). As a result, by 1912 much OFHN was inside Oregon proper while much still remained outside Oregon's borders... until 1949 when all OFHN except central & southern areasinside OR finally merged into new state called 'Oregon'. This event effectively ended Sioux Nation's presence on northern border OfHn (and consequently their right to usesacollegetation resources) - one which continues to this day despite numerous attempts by MINNEAPOLIS & other agencies to revictimize those resources! As such... MUCH OF THE STUFF YOU SEE IN SACO TODAY WAS ACTUALLY HERE BEFORE THE merger happened... just hidden behind government control!

Saco is a town in Maine, United States. The population was 1,661 at the 2010 census. Saco is part of the Portland-Vancouver-Hillsborough, ME Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Saco River forms the town's eastern border and flows through its center. The first settlers in what would become Saco were French Canadians who arrived by canoe from Quebec in 1799. In 1822, the United States bought a tract of land east of present day Saco from the Canadian government for $5 per acre (1/4 acre = £0.50). named after General John Graves Simcoe, this purchase marked the beginning of American settlement in Maine. The Town of Saco was platted on November 15th, 1824 and dedicated on December 10th by Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter as "the most respectable town within our limits". Sacoburn School opened for students in grades one through twelve on September 3rd1875 and currently serves over 1400 students from kindergarten through twelfth grade along with hundred or more adult volunteers! It is located on Church Street just south of State Road 523 which leads to Bangor and Penobscot counties!
In 1820, Saco was founded as a town by Captain George H. Prescott and his family. The first settler in the town was James Caldwell, who built a cabin on the banks of the Penobscot River. In 1825, Saco received its charter from the Maine Legislature and became a city. It grew steadily until it reached its peak in 1860 when it had a population of 2,500 people. However, this growth stopped abruptly due to an economic crash that year. The city's decline continued until 1925 when it merged with nearby Auburn to form the present-day city of Auburn.
