Saco, Maine is a town in Cumberland County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,965 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Penobscot River and is part of the Portland-Vancouver metropolitan area. Saco is located in the eastern corner of Maine and straddles both banks of the river. The first European to set foot in what is now Saco was Captain John Smith on July 14, 1607 when he and his party arrived from England with news of an unexplored region north of Cape Cod. He named it "Newfound Land" after finding a document that stated this land had been Purchased by King George II from some Indian chiefs for £10 per acre (that's $1,200 today). A French exploratory party led by Samuel de Champlain also discovered valuable resources in New France before leaving for Quebec City in 1702 but no one followed up on their discoveries until 1703 when Pierre Marquette arrived with three men and two dogs bearing reports that a large body of water lay between Georgian Bay and Lakes Superior and Huron - this was verified by mapping later that year! In 1784 Major Joseph Leach founded a sawmill here which continued operations until 1829. In 1812 George Halsey became ownerof an extensive timber plantation along the Penobscot River which included much of what is now Saco Township; he renamed it Halsey Forest Company. The mill closed down around 1840 due to competition from other mills in nearby Bangor. However, there are several references to Saco Mill during this time including: "a certain Mr Leach having erected...an early millwright’s house nearby", "a small frame gristmills [in] Nags Head", "a large frame gristmills [in] Westfield", "another large frame gristmill [in] Northfield". In 1851 local resident James Fenton built the first electric power plant near where Interstate 95 meets Maine State Road 128; it used 24 volts DC from an Edison transformer bought secondhand from Boston Edison Company property adjoining present day Saco High School. This millstream still flows through Fenton Park today as does Depot Street which intersects Main Street about two blocks east thereof (Fenton Mill Drive/Road). In 1900 Saco had 1 post office & 5 stores; its population total was 2,554 residents consisting of 711 males& 614 females; these numbers decreased over time as families moved away or were forced out by relocations or closures caused by wars or other economic changes throughout America etc.; however its ZIP code remained unchanged at 93409 until 1978 when it changed to 97402 effective January 1st following enactment into law by then Governor Farley Perdue certifying thatSacOwasno longercomprisingtheTownofMaineand should be treated as such under state law.. Some remaining businesses include: Old Mrs Price’s Bakery (closed 1986), The China Shop (closed 1979), Brunswick Hardware Store (closed 1981), East End restaurant (& bar) (since demolished), Pioneer Hardware Store & Supermarket (since closed 2002).
