The Coast Guard has been providing security and assistance to the people of Saco for over a century. The first coast guard station in Saco was established in 1878, and the present day Coast Guard Station at 7 Depot Street was built in 1941. Since its inception, the Coast Guard has played an important role in helping keep our community safe. Some of the most memorable incidents that have occurred within Saco include: - A devastating fire that destroyed parts of downtown Saco on December 3, 1946; - A successful search for missing persons that began on July 5, 1982; - The rescue of more than 100 people from a sinking boat on October 15, 1999; - The response to Hurricane Irene on September 12, 2011.

The Saco Coast Guard Station was established in 1847 and is one of the oldest coast guard stations on the Maine coast. The station has a variety of services offered such as search and rescue, law enforcement, environmental protection, and maritime patrols. In addition to its regular service, the station also provides support for local events such as parades and festivals. During the 1980s, the Coast Guard began to purchase land along the coast of Maine in order to install a new harbor. This project was completed in 1990 and allowed for increased cargo handling at the station. In 2000, the Coast Guard purchased additional land south of Saco in order to expand their harbor facility. The expansion added more berths for vessels and created a new docking area for boats.
Saco, Maine is a small town located in the central part of the state of Maine. The population was 2,898 at the 2000 census. The Saco area has been inhabited by Native Americans for many years. In 1795 a group of French traders and missionaries traveled through this area and noted that the natives had an earthwork called "Pine Point", which they interpreted as an ancient astronomical observatory. This observation spot is still visible today on the eastern side of town near King's Highway. The first permanent English settler in what is now Saco County was John Stevens in 1810. He built his cabin on Salmon Falls River, east of present-day Saco, and named it Stevensville after himself. A post office was established at Saco in 1827, and remained in operation until 1923. The first store in what is now downtownSaco opened its doors on December 6, 1827. At that time there were only two houses in town – one on Swansea Road and one on Main Street – both of which are still standing today. In 1946, following World War II, Saco became part of the new United States Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). As part of AEC's program to develop atomic energy within reach of all Americans, development began immediately for power plants to be built at saco Creek below South High School; these projects would eventually become known as Pine Point Power Plant and New England Electric ever since their construction began in 1951-1952 according to local lore (the plant closed operations in 1978). The Coast Guard has been in existence since 1790. The first Coast Guard Station was established at Point Reyes National Seashore, California, on October 1, 1820. The Coast Guard Auxiliary was established on December 15, 1920. A Coast Guard unit became a permanent force on May 25, 1941 when the United States Navy seceded from the United States and merged with the Coast Guard. On July 29, 1950 the name of the service was changed from US coast guard to US naval coast guard to its current name of the Coast Guard on September 2, 1951. The first ship to be equipped with a patrol vessel for coastal defense was USCGC Constitution (PC-2) which arrived at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Orford Harbor, New Hampshire on June 10thof 1951 under construction as USS Constellation (AGS-5). On November 8th of that year USS Constitution had her keel laid down and she reached her final destination - Hampton Roads Naval Shipyard in Virginia Beach where she joined sister ships USS Independence (LPD-3) and USS George Washington (CVN-76) as part of Destroyer Squadron 5 during Fleet Week 1952. She served until December 7th when she left Norfolk Naval Shipyards for duty as an Anti-Submarine Warfare Patrol vessel off Newport News beachesVirginia In January 1953 she returned to Portsmouth Naval Shipyard where she remained until 1955 when[she]was transferred to Homestead Marine LaboratoryIn Miami FloridaShe decommissioned thereon February 3rd 1956 and entered into storage Until March 26th 1957 when[she]she arrived at Suisun Bay Municipal PierIn Suisun CityCaliforniaTo serve as a training ship between San Francisco Bay Area portsWhere She anchoredUntil April 1968When[she]she departed for homeport at Yokosuka Japan On August 3rd 1898 the first U.S deck boat called "Newfoundland" sailed out from Newport News Harbor Toward Alameda California after being launched by Commodore John J F Stroud[USCG]. It is believed this was one of only two such operationsever authorized by Congress during peacetime! An arsonist set fire to Hircotown Lighthouse near Boston Massachusetts on December 14th 1888 killing 4 people including Commandant James Broughton who fought against arsonism! This event is still commemorated every year by participating local businesses in lightingChristmas candles at Hircotown lighthouse!!!!!! The first lifeboat ever built actually sank while rescuing crewmen from sunken ship SS Saratoga off Long Island New York back in 1854!!! Two men died and all 28 members of their crew were saved !!! This story originated from an old song about it called “The Sinking Of SS Saratoga” written by Jerome Kern A tugboat named Enterprise also sank while rescue efforts were being made following a gas leak caused by an oil rig explosion onshore off Louisiana in 1915! All 15 crewmembers lost their lives but they were never found!
The Coast Guard Auxiliary was founded on December 12, 1922, by the merger of the United States Coast Guard Cutter Service and the United States Ferryboat Service. The Auxiliary is a civilian maritime service that provides support to the Coast Guard invarious activities, including law enforcement and search and rescue.
Saco, Maine is a small town located in the heart of the Penobscot Mountains. The town was founded in 1802 by Captain John Smith and his wife, Hannah. Saco became a incorporated municipality in 1907 and was known as the "Gateway to the Mountains." Saco has been called the "Town of Roses" because of its many roses that are grown on its farms. The town's name comes from Saco Bay, which is located about one mile southeast of the downtown area. Saco was once part of Cumberland County, but it now belongs to Hancock County. The population of Saco was 953 at the 2000 census. The first people to live in what is now Saco were those who accompanied Captain John Smith when he explored what is now New England in 1776. These early settlers were primarily fishermen and farmers who traveled up and down the Penobscot River looking for new land to settle. By 1802, there were already 10 families living in sacos (townships). In 1907,sacō became an incorporated municipality with a population of 350 people While most residents here still speak English as their first language, there are also several hundred residents who come from all over Maine including Quebec Canada and California USA . Most residents here actually identify themselves as Mainers or simply call themselves “ locals” The economy here depends heavily on agriculture which accounts for 90%ofthe local GDP.
