Army deployed gift history in Saco, Maine began with the establishment of the Saco Rifle and Pistol Club in 1873. The club was organized to promote rifle and pistol shooting in the town. In 1889, the first annual meeting of the Saco Rifle and Pistol Club was held. At that meeting, it was decided to establish a military detachment in Saco as part of an effort to improve relations between the United States and Great Britain. On November 12, 1889, Major Horace W. Houghton organized the 1st Infantry Regiment of New York Volunteers at Armory Square in downtownSaco. The regiment's colors were chosen black with yellow piping for good luck. The regiment served during World War I and II before being disbanded on October 15, 1946. On July 17, 1899, Govan Burt donated a rifle to the town from his estate in Fayetteville, Arkansas. It was christened "Govan" after Govan Burt III who had been mayor of Saco from 1889-1893 and 1897-1901. The rifle is located on display at Town Hall today. That same year saw another donation by Govan Burt when he donated $100 to help finance a new gymnasium for SacO High School which opened in 1901 . In 1902, Mayor Harry Jonson offered $1,000 for any musket or cannon that could be found lying unused within 50 miles of town limits . On September 9th 1902 Governor John Cushing presented a Colt Officer's model revolver (serial number 1861) to Mayor Harry Jonson as a gift for his services to the city during its time as mayor from 1901-1902 inclusive). On December 4th 1903 Mayor Harry Jonson presented a Winchester Model 1886 Shotgun (serial number 6046) to Colonel George Lacy Who served with distinction during World War I as Commandant General Department American Forces Europe Theaterof Operations; Colonel Lacy also gifted an M1 Carbine shotgun ( serial number 8752) to Mayor Harry Jonson on February 26th 1904 along with other items including two shotguns and four pistols from his collection which were displayed at City Hall until moved into storage following Hurricane Andrew which destroyed most civic buildings in late 1988/early 1989
