The Saco-based United States Air Force has a rich history dating back to World War I. The first fighter squadron was activated in 1917 and served with the American Expeditionary Forces in France as part of the First World War. In 1922, the USAF was organized as an independent service and flew its first mission, flying reconnaissance aircraft over Siberia. TheAAF began operations against Japan in 1945 and played a significant role in Operation Downfall, which culminated with the surrender of Japan. Since then, the USAF has flown more than 150 missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom andOperation Iraqi Freedom. In fiscal year 2018, it operates more than 560 airplanes across 34 countries. The USAF is also responsible for providing airlift for coalition operations including relief supplies to Afghanistan and Iraq, conducting air strikes against targets worldwide, and providing nuclear deterrence by operating two bomber fleets: one based at Minot AFB ND and one located at Memphis TN. Today’s USAF is a diverse force that responds to global challenges with unmatched capabilities. Smith started the gift tradition in 1945 when he gifted a set of Civilian Marksmanship Rifle ammunition to the Saco Chamber of Commerce. In 1957, Major General James E. In 1825, Saco became a state capital and was renamed Augusta after King George III of Great Britain. Saco, Maine is located in the eastern part of the United States and it's named after Saco, a small town in Sweden. The first European settlers arrived in 1802 and they started to explore the area. In 1824, one of these pioneers was John Greenway who founded what is now Saco. Greenway and his friends decided to name their new settlement after Saco, which made sense because it was then just a small village. The town grew rapidly and by 1852 it had over 1,000 residents. It was during this time that Saco became an important commercial center due to its location on the Penobscot River. Additionally, Saco played an important role in the development of American liberalism as many of its citizens were involved in political activism. However, despite its importance, Saco experienced some financial setbacks during the late 19th century. In 1893, for example, local businesses went bankrupt due to a drought that struck at the same time as a nationwide depression however; overall Saco managed to remain solvent until around 1920 when it lost much of its economic power thanks to technological advancements and changes in transportation methods.
