The history of the Portland Navy detachment is reflective of the navy in general. The first naval detachment was organized in 1794 and served as a patrolling force along the coast of Maine. In 1807, the navy was reorganized and the Portland detachment became part of Rear Admiral John A. Macdonald’s squadron which sailed to suppress piracy off Cape Cod. The Portland detachment also participated in engagements at Trafalgar and Penobscot Bay. During World War II, Portland’s naval detachment played an important role by providing manpower for Naval Air Station Brunswick and Naval Hospital Bangor. After World War II, the detachments stopped serving as a full-time military branch and were instead divided into maritime police units which continued to provide law enforcement services until 1991 when they were merged into the city police department. Today, there are still remnants of the old navy presence inPortland with The USS Constitution Museum hosting a variety of ship models including HMS Intrepid (1801), USS Monitor (1860), USS Constitution (1797), USS Olympia (1912) and more. Additionally, several small businesses have maintained ties with sailors from previous eras such as Thimble Printing House which prints official ration cards for members of the navy along with other memorabilia related to service within Oregon's armed forces dating back to 1861
