Portland, Maine is home to the United States Air Force's 8th Wing and its 5th Mission Wing. Together, these wings provide support for a wide range of missions in space and time. The U.S. Air Force has been stationed in Portland since 1947, when it relocated from Denver, Colorado. The city of Portland was founded by General David Hunter on May 15, 1820 as a landing ground for British troops marching through the area during their invasion of Canada. The first structure built in town was the blacksmith shop on Brooks Street. A sawmill was built on the site in 1824 and became one of the most important businesses in town until it closed down in 1903. In 1827, Portland became an official port of entry for immigrants coming into America via sailboat. From 1907-1913, two airfields were located within city limits – Morrison Field and Waltham Aerodrome (now known as Houlton Field). Morrison Field served as a training ground for fighter pilots while Waltham Aerodrome served as an auxiliary field capable of hosting bombers and fighters during World War I and II. In 1947, General Curtis LeMay moved his Headquarters from Washington D.C.–and with it all its dispatches–to Portland after his successful test launch campaign at nearby Cape Canaveral Air Force Station that summer earning him national notoriety and causing great concern among international allies about American military power projection abroad He also ordered that all military equipment be moved from Denver to Portland so that excess inventory could be retired and distributed among other branches of service without having to leave behind any combat hardware or technology! The move not only made Portland an administrative center for USAF activities throughout the Northwest but also opened up many acres atop Falcon Ridge overlooking downtown for civilian development which would include much housing construction over the years including some magnificent brick buildings now called Levee House/Newport Hotel/Portland State University Hospital/PDX Tower today! Many restaurants soon followed suit with nightclubs dotting every block once nightlife began kicking off again Downtown merchants quickly realized they had something special here! Over time many talented young people have worked here including such luminaries as Steve Jobs who grew up just blocks away from where he currently lives; Neil Armstrong who walked on moon soil; Bill Gates; Tom Cruise; Oprah Winfrey; Governor Casey Kasich etcetera etcetera

The Portland, Maine Air National Guard's 144th Airlift Wing deployed a gift of coffee to the people of Afghanistan on December 16 in commemoration of Christmas. The coffee was brought by Northwest Coffee Company and distributed by the Bangor Area Community Action Project.

It is no secret that the United States Air Force has a long and proud history of deploying gift-giving. However, it was only in the mid-2000s that a special relationship began to form between the USAF and The Salvation Army. In order to support Operation Christmas Child, which helps children in poverty stricken areas in Central America, The Salvation Army donated nearly 1 million pounds of food to be delivered by the USAF. Since then, the USAF and The SalvationArmy have enjoyed an ever-growing partnership. Together, they annually send millions of pounds of gifts to different charities across the United States. This year alone, they will donate over $100 million in gifts! This longstanding relationship between USAF and The SalvationArmy is nothing short of amazing; it shows just how much we appreciate their contributions to society – both big and small.
