That same year, Lewiston became a port of call for the British Royal Navy during their blockade of Boston. In 1825, the USS United States was launched here and played an important role in suppressing a slave revolt on board HMS Dolphin. In 1893, Lewiston became home to the first naval air station in America when it opened at Bangor Naval Air Station. The station played an important role in World War I and II. In 1947, Bangor Naval Air Station closed its doors following the end of World War II. Since then,Lewiston has seen several additions to its naval fleet including two destroyers (USS Enterprise and USS John F Kennedy) as well as a submarine base (USS Portland). Today, Lewiston is one of three ports of call for U.S. Navy ships operating out of Portsmouth Naval Shipyard located on Patriots Bayou near New Orleansport Louisiana.

Lewiston is a town in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. The population was 3,841 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Augusta–Auburn, Maine metropolitan area. Thetown was founded in 1853 and named for General Lew Wallace. The town began as a small community on the south bank of the Penobscot River near where it confluence with the Narrows forms what is now called Bangor Township. A sawmill and gristmill were built in 1853 by John S. Merrill and James L. Payne; they were later acquired by George Wetherbee who built a large flour mill and grain elevator here in 1885-1887. In 1886, Lewiston became an incorporated town under the name of "Lewiston". The first mayor was John Fenton (1886-1892). In 1908, Lewiston voters passed a resolution to change their name to "Bangor" after alterations made to its river boundaries by USGS surveyors during that year's mapping of Maine land claims resulting from Alaska's discovery of new lands east of Baffin Island. Lewiston experienced heavy flooding during winter storms in 1957 and 1958 which destroyed many homes and businesses along both banks of the Penobscot River. Some residents returned home followingfwilking outflooding had subsided but others elected not to return until floodwaters receded completely two weeks later when state engineers estimated that damage done during January 1-2 would have been between $500,000-$1 million if fully destructive floods had occurred over 4 days instead of 2 weeks due to snowmelt storage conditions). An extensive rebuilding program followed which brought back much business activity including: a grocery store (now known as Bigelow’s), post office (now closed), 6 restaurants/bars/nightclubs (now all gone), 5 hardware stores (all reopened), steamboats used for fishing (now docked at Ross Lake Marina), 3 churches - Congregationalist (.5 mile south of town on bridge over Penobscot River) cathedrals being replaced with Lutheran services beginning on October 15th 1954; Presbyterian (.7 mile east side off bridge over river; closing service effective September 20th 1959), Episcopalian (.4 mile north side off bridge over river just past junction with Bridge Street) services having begun September 15th 1954; Armstrong Supply & Sales Co., located across from post office building since 1927 when company started doing business as Secretary Store #8 opposite Post Office Annex building; Boom House Bakery opened brick bricks bakery next door to Armstrong Supply & Sales Co.; present day Farmers Market opens at corner stable block away from Main Street side street parking lot
