In the early 19th century, the navy was a vital part of Maine’s defense. The state had a small population and no standing army, so its militias were all that was available to supplement the militia system of Massachusetts. In 1807, Maine became a state and the navy grew in importance. With privateering becoming more common in the era, it became necessary for ships to be stationed at sea to patrol for pirates. The first naval vessel built in Maine was HMS “Caledonia” on December 3, 1810. This ship served as an aid to maritime patrols until she was destroyed by fire in 1812 while off Cape Cod. After this event, warships began sailing from Portland and Bangor to serve as auxiliaries to the militias of Maine. These vessels usually carried stores and ammunition for these militias as well as troops when needed. In 1814, Commodore James Auld replaced Lord Exeter as commander of British forces in North America with orders to protect US traders shipping through New England waters. As a result of this order, HMS “ Dartmouth” sailed from Boston Harbor on March 12th carrying supplies for Fort Sumter in Charleston County SC during the American Civil War (1861-1865). HMS “Dartmouth” also saw service during World War I (1918-1921). She served primarily as escort carrier USS “Pensacola” throughout most of her voyage southbound from convoy formation duty off Newfoundland into Spanish waters before reaching Key West Florida on October 10th 1919 after passage around Cape Hatteras Island en route therefrom; however she never made land or attacked any enemy ships despite serving at such times within 8500 miles of Europe and Africa! This warship is one example among many that have been donated by Navy personnel or their families over time. Many donations are Congressional Ships which served our nation during wartime periods including USS Constitution (LST 964), USS Preble (LCS 11) and USS Lewiston (LSD 9) which all took part in Operation Neptune Spear – Desert Storm against Iraq on November 5th 1991
This year, the Navy is deploying a number of gifts to help servicemen and women in the military. Lewiston, Maine is a town located in the U.S. state of Maine. As of the 2010 census, the population was 15,746. The name Lewiston comes from a French placename meaning "beautiful bay." The first permanent settler in what is now Lewiston was Nicholas Cotton and his family in 1799. Cotton's plantation failed due to unfavorable weather and he returned to England with his family in 1802. In 1805, Alexander Macdonald founded the town on land that had been donated by David Thompson. It was named for Admiral Sir George Mackenzie who had commanded British forces at Quebec during the War of 1812. On July 1, 1860, Lewiston became an incorporated town with a population of 10,000 people under its banner as one of 118 towns statewide created by act of Congress known as "Statute No. 80". The economy of Lewiston has been based largely on fishing and manufacturing since its incorporation into town government over 100 years ago; however, recent diversification has included real estate development and retail services such as restaurants and boutiques along with heavy emphasis on education and health care within the past few decades. Lewiston's unique history has bloomed out over time through several festivals which take place throughout summertime including Folk Festival & Art Fair (July/August), Heritage Days (October), Salmonfest (November) & Harpoonfest (January). These events provide opportunity for locals to learn about local history while enjoying some great music and eats like fresh seafood or home-cooked meals made from all natural ingredients
