The Biddeford National Guard was established in 1933. The first unit was organized on December 6, 1933. The National Guard has grown since its establishment and today the Biddeford National Guard consists of more than 4,000 members who provide support to the local community through service in various capacities. The Biddeford National Guard is a volunteer arm of government that provides law enforcement, security, and economic stability in rural areas across Maine. The missions of the Biddeford National Guard include providing critical manpower for state government functions such as: patrol, protection of vital infrastructure, military affairs, and emergency response; conducting search and rescue operations; providing education on firearms safety; providing outreach to the general population; assisting with social services including housing assistance and food pantry donations; performing ceremonial duties such as parades and funerals. One important part of the national guard’s history is its gift giving tradition. From 1934-1996 nearly every detachment within the national guard contributed at least one gift to charity throughout Maine. Biddeford, Maine is a town in Lincoln County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Forks-based Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Biddeford were the Malaquot people. They were hunters and gatherers who lived along the Penobscot River during the late pre-Columbian period. In 1655, Englishman John Smith discovered land that would become Biddeford when he passed by on his way from finding a route to New England through Canada. He named it after Sir Humphrey Biddycombe of Windsor Castle in England who had helped him map that area while on his travels around 1639-40. At first there was only a small group of settlers living here; but with the coming of lumberjacks and other traders to this region in the early 1800s, things changed rapidly and many families began moving into town from all over central Maine for work or just for some reason to have fresh air and new possibilities. It wasn’t until 1820 that an ordinance was passed establishing Biddeford as a town under state law; however, it didn’t take long before residents realized they needed more than just a store or schoolhouse to keep them together and they started building churches and homes soon thereafter (many still stand today). By 1830 there were six church buildings standing in town – four Greek Revival style affairs built by ministers such as Hiram Wigglesworth (founder of Waterville), Ebenezer Holmes (founder of Bangor), Isaac Sears (founder of Auburn) and Ezekiel Willard (presidential candidate). Of particular note are two Gothic Revival style structures – one at 209 Main Street which served as library until 1922 and then as post office until 1959; while another Gothic Revival styled building at 232 Main Street which served as hotel until 1925 before being converted into apartments/condominiums known today as “The Gables” . In 1836 an act was passed authorizing local government within limits set forth in section 3A of chapter 9 of the Maine Constitution; this allowed for incorporation by referendum so soon thereafter it became clear that towns like Biddeford would be necessary if anything like progress was going to be made hereabouts since no county or state jurisdiction could possibly encompass everything that needed to be done within its boundaries! And so it came about that on November 5th 1836 citizens voted overwhelmingly in favor of incorporation by submitting resolutions stating: “That we do earnestly desire real estate belonging appurtenant thereto may hereafter become property subject thereto aforesaid; That we recommend patience therein through good times and bad; That we pledge ourselves not lightly but 100% obedience thereto should any eventuate inconsistent with our wishes aforesaid” Biddeford quickly became one of those places where progress meant business continuity was maintained day-in AND day-out even when times got tough – something most locals took pride in! The arrivals & departures of waves of immigrants during both World Wars added fuel to their fire memory bank making sure everyone knew their place without ever having too much trouble understanding what everyone else meant! Even after becoming an incorporated city & country municipality back in 1935 things didn’t change very much because politics always play out differently here than anywhere else!
