Biddeford is a town located in Penobscot County, Maine. The population was 1,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bangor-Southern Maine metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Biddeford was Hugh Farnsworth in 1795. The town was founded on December 12, 1819 by John Morse and others as a result of the Treaty of Gadsden which ended the War of 1812. The town name comes from "Big Bend" or "Buffalo Bend", where a bend in the river formed by two hills made for horse traffic and cattle pasturing. In 1895, General Electric began production at its Power Plant No. 3 near downtown Biddeford; this led to a rapid growth in businesses and people associated with GE throughout Maine and New England. In 1916, when General Electric merged with Westinghouse to form United States Steel Corporation, Biddeford's share in that company went up from zero percent to over 50%. As steel production rose throughout America during World War II, jobs were created right here at GE; many workers stayed after the war ended to help restart those mills after modifications were made toavoid any potential atomic accidents. After years of decline due largely to changing technology and other factors (the entire electrical industry underwent such an upheaval following Hiroshima/ Nagasaki that many towns lost their textile markets), Biddeford has experienced recent resurgence with new businesses opening up all around town while preserving its old charm.

As part of efforts underway by Congregationalist ministers associated with Green Mountain Baptist Church in Northampton County to revive religious life in what had been essentially a deserted area following World War II,[1] plans were made for a meeting on October 16th 1951 called "A Look Ahead: A Gathering To Promote Religious Faith Amongst Our People Of Color"[2] at which representatives from various denominations would address issues related to faith among people living among them without formal church support or instruction; proposals for action items resulting from this meeting were developed into ordinances passed at that meeting which formed then-BC Congregational Fellowship[3] (later United Presbyterian Church) – now Episcopal Diocese of Portland.[4][5][6] This historical event is significant because it signaled an awakening among congregations across eastern Massachusetts about their shared responsibility “to make discipleship available through worshipful work together” (ECF Order No., #10). This idea that denominational identity should not supersede congregation identification began slowly building within Episcopal churches but eventually exploded as denominational boundaries eroded throughout much of mainline Protestantism due largely to events such as Vatican II (1962)—a time period characterized by increasing diversity within evangelical Christianity[7][8][9]). Consequently, many Episcopal churches began developing ministries specifically focused on serving people outside their traditional congregations including outreach programs designed especially for those living below poverty lines or minority groups—the first comprehensive effort like this within mainline Protestantism since WWII[10].
