The Bangor Coast Guard Station has been providing emergency services to the community of Bangor since 1876. The Coast Guard Station was first established as a small detachment under the command of Captain John Auld. In 1887, the station was transferred to the jurisdiction of the harbor authority and renamed the Harbor Department. The Headquarters Building was built in 1912 and is still used today as headquarters for both branches of the Coast Guard. In 1924, a new Commanding Officer’s House was built on land donated by Mrs. J.H. Halsey and it served as headquarters until 1945 when it became a barracks for male cadets at USMaine Agricultural College (now USMaine University). On July 15, 1948, Headquarters moved from its original location on Commercial Street to what is now Government House which serves as our present headquarters building. The history of gifts to the coast guard station began with donations made in memory of sailors or marine officers killed in action during World War I and World War II. From 1925-1946, gifts were made annually in honor of United States Marine Corps personnel lost in action or who have rendered distinguished service while serving with distinction with either branch of service within our country’s armed forces; these include medals, buttons and other items portraying Marine Corps insignia or depicting unique moments during their military careers including combat deployments ashore aboard vessels captained by United States Marines (the “Marine Mommy” gift). During 1957-1968 an annual donation campaign called “Dedicated To Our Veterans” was organized which sought to increased understanding and support among veterans parents who had lost sons or husbands while serving our country Armed Forces through contributions made by citizens throughout Maine ranging from cash donations up to personal memorials erected at shore properties near where their loved ones died while protecting our communities from harm or danger offshore. As well as several dozen Public Service Announcements promoting donations being available at any time for individuals interested in helping salute America’s wars fought overseas thru giving back some portion of their income thru patriotism! During this time period also many commemorative coins were minted honoring Navy Sailors Killed In Action WWII-1964 thru 1971 inclusive including one featuring Rear Admiral Nimitz Commemorative Coin Series KM#1 . This dedicated tributecoin program continued onto those following years until 1978 when all public donations ceased due to budgetary changes within NOAA related directly thereto; however many wonderful maritime memorabilia and artifacts continue to be collected throughout this region via private collections managed by various descendants thereof ever since! The Coast Guard has been providing basic and essential services to the public for over 120 years. As one of the most heavily manned and frequently requested organizations in our society, the Coast Guard has a rich history that can be traced back to 1879. One of the first organizations chartered by Congress as part of the newly created Department of Commerce were a coast guard detachment from Rhode Island. The first official act of the new department was to establish a coast guard detachment at Newport, Rhode Island, on July 1, 1879. The Coast Guard Auxiliary was organized on December 15, 1941 under section 511 of Title 8 United States Code. The Auxiliary is composed of individuals who voluntarily contribute their time and effort to support other members of the Coast Guard through various activities including drill training exercises and patrols off American coasts. On May 12, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed into law Executive Order 10952 which established an Office of Marine Security within the Department of Commerce responsible for coordinating all aspects related to maritime security within agencies operating pursuant to Merchant Marine Act Sections 6(a) and 7(d). On November 17, 1944 President Harry S Trumansigned Executive Order 14515 which designated Headquarters at Washington Navy Yard as National Coastal Security Center (NCSC) with responsibility for functions formerly vested in different sections or offices within departments or branches thereof - such as Patrol Boat Service (PBS), Naval Sea Systems Command (NSC), Maritime Administration (MARAD) and Emergency Management Agency (EMA). This organization consolidated wartime responsibilities between War Departments concerned with patrol operations along coasts Line-of-Arms; Areas where commercial shipping Passes through without stopping or searching; All Ports open To Maritime traffic And Offshore Waters--and created Federal Program directed toward saving lives By preventing hazardous materials from reaching dangerous shores
