The United States Air Force deployed a gift to Bangor, Maine in 1947. The gift was an airplane, called the P-51D Mustang. This plane was gifted to the town by General Curtis LeMay, the then Commander of American Forces in Europe.

The Bangor Daily News documented the history of the Bangor Air National Guard's Deployed Gift Unit in a series of articles from 1995 to 2006. The unit was established in 1985 as a means for ANG members to send gifts to friends and family back home during military deployments. Since its inception, the Deployed Gift Unit has sent more than 8,000 gift items- includingitems such as T-shirts, hats, cookies, and candy bars- to loved ones stationed overseas. In honor of National Defense Day on July 4 this year, the unit will send out an extra 2,500 gift items to servicemen and women living overseas.

The USAF Gift History Program is initiated in response to the needs of military members and their families during the holiday season. The USAF Gift History Program provides unique opportunities for USAF Members and their family members to experience air force service, culture, traditions and more through unique gifts. The USAF Gift History Program began in 1947 as a way for commanders of USAFA fighter squadrons to exchange personal items with their unit’s enlisted personnel during the Christmas season. Since then, the program has grown into an important part of USAAF culture and tradition. In addition to exchanging gifts, USAF Officers and NCOs participate in various other Special Events throughout the year that are purpose-built for gifting purposes. These events include Air Force Day ceremonies, flyovers of major air bases or other helicopters when appropriate, visiting units at homecoming events or deployments overseas, giving tours of duty or conducting funerals for fallen comrades. Bangoran Rapids State Park is located east of Bangor acrossriver from Moose Dam State Park which features a dam constructed over Moose Creek for power generation as well as recreational activities such as fishing and swimming; there are also several hiking/biking trails nearby including Oneida Falls Trail which starts near Interstate 95 exit 9A and goes through several small towns before concluding at Oneida Lake

Bangor was founded in 1795 by Captain John Bangor and his wife Judith as a post office on the border of Cumberland County and York County. It was named for its location on the banks of the Penobscot River. Bangor grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its strategic location at the entrance of Lake Winnipesaukee and its access to trade with other parts of New England. In 1815, it became a city and reached a peak population of 3,000 in 1905. However, due toinent expansions from other towns in Cumberland County, Bangor declined thereafter until it reached its current level of 514 residents in 2010.
