In 1821, Captain James Monsee recommended that the town be renamed Augusta after General Robert E. Lee who had fought in the American Civil War. On July 10, 1825, a resolution was passed by the town's board to rename the town after General Lee. The name change was approved and effective September 1, 1825. According to the United States Census Bureau, Augusta has a total area of , all land. As of 2010 census data, there are 9 residents living in Augusta who declare themselves as either black or African American according to race alone (1 Native American and 6 slaves). As of 2000 census data there were 7 residents living in Augusta who declared themselves as white only (2 male citizens and 5 female citizens)
