Augusta, Maine is a small town located in southcentral Maine. The population as of the 2010 census was 2,871. Augusta is the county seat of Cumberland County and was founded in 1821 by Colonel George Washington Penobscot. Augusta is named after General James K. Polk, who served as President of the United States from April 4, 1860 to March 3, 1865. The Penobscot People occupied what is now Augusta for centuries and their descendants still live there today. The first settlers in Augusta were Major John Knowles and his family who arrived in 1821 fromnorthumberland County, PA. Other early settlers included David Whitehead and his family who arrived around 1825 and erected the first structure on what is now Main Street; Samuel Jarvis who settled here about 1830; John Morse who moved here about 1840; Solomon Rogers who came here about 1850; Ebenezer Morel who settled here about 1860; Augustus Sibley whom we met earlier this year The townspeople built their homes out of logs that they caught during the wintertime while frequenting the local ponds for fishing or when they could find enough stone to build a house without mortar or mortar shells available at home. They also used earthworms that they collected from underfoot to help them build their homes which are still standing today. Many people in Augusta would go into neighboring towns for goods such as flour or potatoes that they would trade with other residents on various occasions back then One of the earliest businesses in town was a bakery where Mrs. Sarah Goodfellow operated it until her death around 1865 In 1867 Mrs. Julia Ayer opened an apothecary shop next door (now known as The Pharmacy) which continued operation until 1886 In 1870 Mr. Hiram Parsons opened a grocery store across from Mrs Ayer’s store which lasted until 1898 In 1876 Jno Purdy started a shoe store on Second Street near present day State House Square In 1886 Librarie Wiedemann established an ice cream parlor on First Street near Depot Square . This business continued until 1916 when it closed because no customers could be found to buy ice cream during summertime . After World War I services were provided by institutions like Amherst Methodist Episcopal Church which had been established adjacent to State House Square . By 1925 there were only two remaining businesses in town: The Post Office (which functioned unchanged since its establishment) and Jno Purdy’s Shoes & Clothing Store which closed circa 1925 due to increased competition from larger stores . At this point most residents either retired or left for greener pastures elsewhere . By 1930 only one business remained: Mrs Ayer’s Apothecary Shop which continued operating until her death in 1938 Many citizens supported local schools through paying taxes even though attendance varied greatly depending on whether one lived within walking distance of one of the nine public high schools located within walking distance of downtown Augusta
