Augusta, Maine is a small town in Hancock County, Maine. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 Census. Augusta is the county seat of Hancock County and has been since 1869. The first settler in Augusta was John Hargrave who arrived in 1799. In 1802, George Washington visited Augusta and ordered the construction of a courthouse and jail to serve as example to other townsfolk. The first post office was opened in 1815 and the town's name changed from Northborough to Augusta on October 15, 1798. In 1830, local farmer John Gorham built a sawmill on the river which became one of the most important mills in eastern Maine. The mill continued operations until 1903 when it was closed by order of the government because of increased competition from machine shops. In 1922, another local contractor built a dam on Beaver Brook which diverted water for use at the millstreams; this made it possible for Augusta to become an incorporated municipality with its own mayor and library board. The city began rapid growth after it became part of the new Portland-Webster metropolitan area in 1996; development included high-rise buildings and apartment complexes that overlook central square where businesses used tosit next to each other on First Avenue before zoning changes made them too close together for business success1 A fire destroyed part of downtown Portland during summer 20062 but no injuries were reported

The first European settlers in what is now Augusta were French Huguenots who arrived in 1784. They named their new settlement after King George III of Great Britain and his consort Queen Charlotte of Denmark. The first courthouse in town was built in 1806. In 1828, the government of Penobscot County was organized with Augusta as its capital. In 1865, during the American Civil War, Confederate General John Custer's column attacked Union forces under General Grant near present-day Augusta and destroyed many buildings including the courthouse and jail before withdrawing to cover their retreat. This event is also known as Custer's Raid on Augusta or Grants' Raid on Augusta. In 1876, local farmers formed a "Council for Better Agriculture" to improve agricultural practices and provide more efficient harvests using measures such as irrigation systems and threshing machines. The council later became known as the Agricultural Experiment Station (AES). Today AES operates as an agricultural research center with programs that focus on corn production; soybeans; wheat; fruits/veggies; dairy products; land management; natural resources; poultry production; horticulture; fish aquaculture and agroforestry
