Augusta, Maine is a town in Hancock County, Maine, United States. The population was 3,932 at the 2010 census. Augusta is part of the Portland–Vancouver metropolitan area. It is the county seat of Hancock County. The first permanent settler in Augusta was Levi Coffin who built a cabin on what is now Bridge Street in 1820. In 1830, Augustus C. Dodge and his brother-in-law John Aiken founded a town on land they had purchased from the Winthrop estate near Windham and established it as Augusta with a meetinghouse and school house. They also built a mill on the river which became one of the largest in Maine; it still stands today along First Street south of US Route 2 (the present day Main Street). In 1836, Augustus Davenport bought some land east of town from John Aiken for $3,000 and laid out street grid that still exists today including Fourth Avenue between Harrison and Third Streets; Fourth Avenue became famous as "Davenport's Boulevard". He also developed an agricultural sector with corn cribs being built along First and Second Avenues to provide irrigation water to his fields. By 1840 there were over 100 residents living in Augusta providing support for both local businesses and the larger town center that was under construction at the time including buildings such as the Court House (now known as Public Safety Headquarters), Post Office, Episcopal Church (1835), Masonic Lodge No. 7 (1840), Bank & Trust Company building (1848), Presbyterian Church (1850) One important event during this time came about when General Ulysses S Grant visited Augusta on July 1st 1846 while he was fighting against General Winfield Scott at Fort Sumter in South Carolina Grant brought many friends back to Augusta including Salmon Pasha who stayed for two weeks before returning home Also during this time many items found its way into museums around America like The Smithsonian Institution Museum of American Art which located their collection within walking distance from downtown Augusta In 1850 General James Ledyard donated fifty acres east side of town to create Ledyard Park after his death This allowed more development but also caused much controversy because most of what would become downtown Atlanta was donated by Nathan Bedford Forrest instead
Augusta was founded in 1755 by Captain James Pownall and his two ships, the brigantine Augusta and the schooner Salem. The first town meeting was held on December 12th of that year. The first public buildings were erected in 1767, including a courthouse and jail. In 1800, the town became an act of Congress to be named after George Washington. In 1814, GeneralJames K. Polk's army passed through Augusta on their way to battle at Buena Vista Creek. General Polk is buried in Elmwood Cemetery next to his general officers.
