It was opened in 1793 and served as a center for discussion of politics, literature, and the arts. In 1802, The Coffee House became the first coffee house in what is now Vermont to be licensed by the state government. In 1806, it moved to its current location on Main Street and continued serving coffee until 1912 when it closed its doors.
Augusta, Maine is a small town located in the heart of the Maine woods. The population was 3,969 as of the 2010 census, making it one of the smallest towns in Maine. Augusta's history dates back to 1794 when General John Stark founded Augusta on Penobscot Bay. In 1827, by order of Governor Isaac Norris, the town was moved from its original location on Penobscot Bay to what is now downtown Augusta. The first store and post office were built in downtown Augusta in 1827. The city of Augusta was incorporated on May 5, 1897. It became a state-supported city after being accepted by the Legislature as a part of Portland on February 20, 1898. On March 8, 1899, Mayor James Bigham declared that Augusta had become an independent city with its own government and currency system which would be separate from that of Portland. On November 1st 1906 during a snowstorm Augustus received damage when heavy machinery overturned near Main Street and North Park Avenue. A plow driver named Walter Sanger died trying to clean up the wreckage which left deep tracks throughout much of downtown including into newly developed areas such as North Park Avenue and Main Street today known as Pioneer Square . In 1907 Augustus also saw its first movie theater when Haddonfield projector George Brown donated his equipment for use at Central High School auditorium where films were shown for school students until 1924 when they moved to larger venues such as Maine State Fairgrounds or even out into town at various locations before finally moving permanently to their current location in Pioneer Square in 1933 .
