The Augusta, Maine Army Garrison was established in 1785 as the first military installation in the State of Maine. The garrison was originally a barracks and fortification on land donated by General Israel Putnam. The fortifications were destroyed in 1814 but were rebuilt and named Fort Machias after Major-General John Machiavelli, who had served as Superintendent of Military Affairs for the Province of Maine from 1795 to 1800. In 1846, the detachment moved to its present location at Fort Machias which became an infantry brigade post during World War II. In 1917, when World War I began, General John J. Pershing ordered all U.S. forces in Canada to be mobilized and placed under his command until war ended or he was relieved by his superiors. On July 10th, 1917 General Pershing issued Order No. 9 ( entitled "Army Deployment Policy Directive"), which directed that all arms and munitions should be brought back overland from Toronto to Boston so that they could be used against Germany if needed and also called for all soldiers who could not return home with their equipment to report at Augusta within ten daysMaximum! This order caused much debate as many people wanted their weapons back before it got too late and some believed that this would lead to a arms race between America and Great Britain which would ultimately lead to world war II! Despite the protestations of some soldiers stationed at Augusta, most everyone except for a few officers realized that mobilization had already been accomplished and preparations were being made for war time activities such as training new recruits, stocking food supplies, providing medical care etcetera. The only civilians allowed on base were those working on subsistence farms near the garrison or children accompanying their parents who worked on local factories outside town limits). When World War I ended on November 11th 1918 almost one million American troops had served in Europe including 6 hundred officers and men from Maine! Although there wasn’t any formal declaration of victory until January 1919 when Germany finally collapsed after months of warfare following Napoleon’s defeat at Waterloo; United States forces had won a major victory over European armies! It is interesting to note that while every other country declared war on Germany; no country paid any attention to Maine residents or garrison personnel who continued with their normal routines despite what seemed like an impossible situation! AfterWorld WarI Armistice Day President Wilson issued Executive Order 9066 which dissolved both German armies in eastern Belgium effective May 10th 1919 thereby ending World War I entirely! This event marked an important change in Allied strategy since prior thereto all efforts had been focused upon defeating Kaiser Wilhelm II’s Central Powers rather than dismantling them piecemeal across Europe! After World War I came into effect Austria-Hungary abolished its armythus ending WWI!!! Between 1920-1921 there were two more wars fought by Allies against Russia:the Civil War in Afghanistanand WWIIin North Africa!! Although America did not participate directlyin these wars; millions of Americans did serve with various units located throughout Europeincluding Maineland National Guard units!!! Augusta Garrison now serving as Headquarters for 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team New England Governor Paul LePage has allocated $111 million dollars towards renovating our infrastructure including repairing our roads, bridges and water systems…..
