The Auburn Naval Shipyard was established in 1892 as the first naval shipyard in Maine. The yards produced more than 180 vessels for the United States Navy during World War II, including four submarines and nineteen destroyer escorts. In 1951, the navy's Portsmouth Naval Shipyard was closed and the Auburn yard became a part of that facility. The shipyards ceased operations in 1972, but they continued to produce sailboats and motorboats until 1984. Today, only one remaining building at the Auburn Naval Shipyard - a historical museum - remains operational.

The town has been called "The Birthplace of Democracy" because it was here that the first free public elections were held in America. Auburn is also known for its historic buildings, such as Representative Hale's House and the old jail that now houses the library.
Auburn, Maine is a town in Androscoggin County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,878 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Portland-Vancouver-Hillsborough, ME Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Auburn were John and Mary King who arrived in 1797. They built a log cabin on what is now Old Auburn Road. In 1802, they married Martha Greenough and moved to what is now East Auburn as their new home. The Kings continued to live there until their death in 1852. One of their daughters became the first female teacher in Maine when she taught school for one year at Westville Female Seminary near Portsmouth before coming to Auburn to teach for two years from 1854 to 1855. Their son George also settled in Auburn and later became a farmer and miller with his brother Isaac Newton. In 1865, Josephine Merrill founded the first post office here which served until 1975 when it was replaced by Northampton Post Office No. 524 (). From 1870 through 1916, local farmers produced hay for shipment up the Penobscot River to Montreal where it was used as feed for livestock; this industry ended after World War I when railroads came into operation transporting goods closer to markets worldwide instead of traveling downriver each season. During World War II, many residents contributed their time and resources towards helping with war production such as working at mills or manufacturing munitions. After the war ended much of the agricultural production died out due to lack of demand from overseas; however some small businesses continue today such as a grocery store and gas station. In 1952 an industrial park was developed adjacent to old textile factories north of town that still exists today known as Park Place Industrial Center.
