The Marine Corps is one of the most highly decorated organizations in American history, having been awarded more medals, awards, and decorations than any other branch of service. The Marine Corps has a long and proud tradition of providing humanitarian assistance to those who are in need. In 2010, marines were deployed to Haiti following an earthquake that caused extensive damage and loss of life. A year later, they were called to support Typhoon Haiyan as it struck Catawba County, North Carolina. While their deployment was short-lived—the Marines returned home two weeks later—it was their response to Typhoon Haiyan that demonstrated their commitment to disaster relief work. In 2012, marines were deployed again to Haiti following another earthquake that had killed over 200 people. This time they worked with local Haitian officials to help rebuild schools, hospitals, and other essential infrastructure. They also conducted humanitarian operations such as delivering food and water to areas hardest hit by the quake. It was during this deployment that marines made history by becoming the first U.S military unit ever allowed into Havana since Fidel Castro came into power in 1959.

Auburn, Maine is a small town in Penobscot County, Maine. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Auburn is located on Route 20 south of Bangor and on the border of Penobscot County with Cumberland County. The first permanent settlers in what is now Auburn were farmers who arrived via ship in 1802. They named their community "Emmett" after an uncle who had died in Canada. A post office was established here in 1804, and it remained in operation until 1907. A new courthouse was built here in 1906 by contractor Elisha Prentice and dedicated on November 6 that year. It replaced a previous building which had been destroyed by a fire the year before. The local school system began operations here in 1889 when two schools were erected for students from Penobscot and Cumberland Counties. In 1912, the townsite was annexed by Bangor and became part of that city's school district; however, Auburn continued to operate its own public school system until 1978 when it merged with the Bangor School District to form the present-day Bangor School System. In 1916, John Witherspoon founded Jardin Farms Dairy near today's intersection of US 20/Route 22 and Main Street; this dairy remains one of the town's most significant institutions today as it produces milk products such as cheese, yogurt, ice cream and other items for local consumption as well as export markets around the world (see History of Auburn). According to The Daily News Register article dated October 16th 1917 about Jardin Farms Dairy: "Mr Witherspoon has been running his farm since 1916... since then he has produced more than 3 million pounds' worth of milk." Mr Witherspoon continues to run his farm today - currently providing milk products for many restaurants within walking distance of his property including Dunkin' Donuts locations across New England as well as internationally through exports to countries such as Spain and Great Britain (see list below). Today there are also several hundred people working at Jardin Farms Dairy who produce milk products for both local consumption and export markets all over North America & Europe (see list below). In 1915, they started sending presents to troops stationed overseas. By 1930, they had sent gifts to every military branch across the globe. Auburn, Maine is a small town in central Maine. The population was 1,691 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Cumberland County. The town was founded in 1827 and named for General John J. Auburn, who led American troops during the Mexican-American War. Auburn was originally part of York County but was annexed by Cumberland County in 1868. The first store in Auburn opened on Main Street in 1827 and soon became an important community center for the area. In 1845, three brothers founded the A & W Brewery in downtown Auburn and it remains one of the most successful breweries today. The town also became home to many schools including Sherman School (now known as Mount Desert Island Elementary), which was founded in 1898; Eastown Academy (1898–1902); and Cumberland High School (1965–2000). Auburn experienced some significant growth during World War II thanks to its proximity to Fort Knox and the abundant production of aluminum cans and other military products. After the war, many businesses closed down or moved away as technology advanced, but some such as ABC Furniture still remain active today. In 1969, local resident George Dennison won a $10 million prize fromlottery fame for his creation of what is now known as "Dennison's Department Store". Today, major shopping destinations include Walmart and Macy's Place across the street from Dunkin' Donuts while smaller independent retailers dot the blocks around downtowns like Bernie's Coffee & More and Local Motorspace Sales
Auburn was founded in 1786 by Dr. James Armstrong and his wife, Rebecca. The town was named for the Auburn waterfalls, which are located about one mile west of the present-day town center. In 1820, the population of Auburn was 1,500 and it became a census-designated place (CDP) in 1961. In 1984, the Community College of Maine opened in Auburn and is now a statewide system with campuses throughout New England. The University of Maine at Auburn is also headquartered in the town.
