The history of marine gift items in Auburn, Maine goes back to the 1800s. One of the first businesses in town was a store called The Mariners. It operated out of a store on Grand Avenue until 1906. In that year, it moved to its current location on Main Street. The Merchants Marine Store was started by Harry and Florence Morse in 1916. It was the first mercantile business in town and one of the longest-running businesses in Auburn. In 1954, it merged with the Jardine & Mathews Company and became known as The Jardine & Matthews Shop. In 1970, it merged with Sears, Roebuck & Co., Inc., becoming Sears Marine/Sears Giftshop #1. From 1971 to 1997, it was known as The Jardine & Matthews Shop at Harbor Plaza mall.

Auburn is the smallest of the five towns in Androscoggin County and is considered to be part of the Bangor metropolitan area. The first settlers in what would become Auburn were farmers who came from eastern Massachusetts in 1819. In 1827, they voted to form a town and settled on three acres (1 hectare) of land north of downtown. The town's first post office was established in 1831 and had a population of six people. In 1865,the first railroad reached Auburn and soon it became an important commercial center for the region. Auburn had its heyday during World War II when it became one of the largest military installations in New England due to its location near Bangor Naval Air Station (BNA). It also played a significant role in later conflicts such as Vietnam and Afghanistan. Today, Auburn is known primarily for its agricultural production which includes cheese, eggs, pork products, apples and other vegetables

Auburn, Maine is a small town in Hancock County, Maine. The population was 1,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland-Vancouver-Hancock metropolitan area. Auburn is one of the oldest towns in Hancock County and started as a small settlement on the banks of the Penobscot River. In 1802, it was moved to its present location on the east side of the river. The first store in Auburn opened in 1812. The village had three homes: One for John Morse and his family, one for Mrs. Kephart and her two children, and one for Jabez Fenton and his family. The first school in Auburn was built in 1815 by Revs James Cushing and Abel Parsons under direction of Governor John Stevens. A new school building was erected in 1903 by Mr. Wm Hutton with help from local citizens who subscribed $2 per month to finance its construction. In 1916, a brick high school building with an auditorium and gymnasium was dedicated by Drs John Quesnel and Walter Laddington Jr.. In 1921, Community College began operations as part of State University of New England (SUEN). The college closed in 1978 but portions were used to create Western Maine Community College which became fully working
