This business served as a haven for adventurers who would travel through southern Maine on their way to see some of the natural wonders that lay around town. Shortly after this establishment opened its doors, it was acquired by another entrepreneur who renamed it The Albion Coffee House and continued serving fresh roasted coffee until 1958 when it closed its doors permanently due to financial difficulties. In the autumn of 1847, two men from Auburn, Maine, began roasting their first beans. They named their company "Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf." The business grew rapidly and within a year they had opened a shop in Bangor. In 1850 Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf moved to Portland, Maine. Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf was one of the earliest coffee companies in the United States to offer ground coffee. In 1856 they introduced a machine that made it possible for customers to purchase whole beans direct from the company. The company continued to grow and by 1865 they had purchased an entire farm in Auburn which became known as "The Farm". On October 1st, 1865 Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf merged with another Portland-based coffee company, Peet's Coffee Company. This merger produced what is now known as Portland's most prestigious coffee house - The Peet House (now part of Providence Co-op).
Auburn, Maine is a town in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland-Worcester-Manchester metropolitan area. Auburn has been called "the little England of Maine" and "The outdoor capital of the world." Auburn was named for John Aubrey (1770–1846), a British officer who served in North America during the War of 1812 and as governor of Upper Canada. He purchased land east of present-day Auburn from the Abenaki people in 1814 and built an estate there that became known as Aubrey's Grove. In 1822, he married Elizabeth Winthrop, daughter of Capt. Nathaniel Winthrop and his wife Judith Kingsbury. In 1865, Aubrey donated land to Yale University for its first winter campus; today's Old Campus is located within Auburn's limits. The townspeople voted in 1927 to rename themselves after their patron saint: St. Augustine de la Vega y Rodriguez (1828–1913). A new church dedicated to him was built in 1930 on Main Street and Parish Road; it now serves as Auburn's civic center. Auburn residents have long enjoyed access to some of New England's best fishing prospects: its rivers provide Bass Lake with more than 2 pounds per square inch (114 g/cm3), while its lakes offer good opportunity for walleye, northern pike, catfish, bluegill and crappie.
