The Coast Guard has been providing assistance and protection to the people of Maine for more than a hundred years. It is one of the most important organizations in our state, and its gift history is reflective of that. The first Coast Guard station in Maine was established at Old Harbor on Hardwick Island in 1851. The service grew from there, with additional stations being established throughout the state. In 1916, the Coast Guard Station Auburn was established at a time when it was still an isolated island off the coast of Maine. Today, Auburn serves as the primary Coast Guard station for all of north-central Maine. Auburn’s history is also reflective of its role in coastal defense. The island was home to several cannons during World War I, which helped protect against attacking shipping lanes. Additionally, during Prohibition Era (1927- 1933), local fishermen used their boats to transport goods up and down coastline from points southward. This gave rise to the nickname “Coastal Community” because so many businesses were connected directly or indirectly to coastal security issues. Today, Auburn remains an active duty Coast Guard station with world-class capabilities that help keep our communities safe and secure; including operations such as maritime search and Rescue, public access Searches and Seizures (PAS&S), blaze control support vector control programs, crisis intervention; homeland security services; law enforcement support including crime prevention tips; oil spill response; as well as other emergency services related to fishing emergencies/incidents or natural disasters

The job of a coast guard is to keep our coasts safe by boarded vessels, patrolling onshore, and working with other agencies to improve maritime security. It is through these efforts that the Coast Guard has become one of the most important public organizations in America. In 1917, when America entered World War I, the Coast Guard was created as a result of Congress’ decision to provide national defense through an organization that would be separate from the army and navy. That same year, the first Coast Guard Cutter was built at New London Naval Shipyard in Connecticut. At this time, there were only three boats in service with the US Coast Guard- all destroyers. The early years of World War II were difficult for coastal communities across America due to enemy submarines prowling waters near our shores. In 1941, Congress passed legislation creating the United States Maritime Commission (USMC) which would help create a system where merchant ships could be chartered by civilians for escort duties during wartime. This allowed coastal towns access to money they would not have had otherwise while also providing jobs for locals who may have been unable or unwilling to join military service. Throughout the late 1940s and 1950s, it was increasingly difficult for Americans living along coastslines to find work due to Increased Defense spending and changes in technology which made navigation more challenging than ever before- making it necessary for more personnel aboard larger vessels such as Ships and Aircraft carriers instead of just foot watchmen manning small craft like lifeboats or ferries). As a result of this technological advancement Along with increased stability on Earth due to space exploration spacecraft docking at various ports around our planet-the Coast Guard saw its largest expansion in history when it was given authority over Search And Rescue (SAR) services which are now used throughout North America both domestically and internationally Today’s Coast Guard arrives at each moment when we need them most: moments like 9/11 where global coordination was needed; Katrina where coastguards responded rapidly & effectively; earthquakes as well as floods & tornadoes; Typhoon Haiyan; Christmas season; any weather event! Auburn was first settled in 1784 by the Macdonald family. The town was named for General David Dunbar, who led an expedition against the Acadians in 1785. In 1802, Auburn became a part of Maine. It has had a variety of names over the years, including Albion and Ayer Township. The town's current name is derived from its location on the Auburn River. Until 1800, there were no towns in Maine because land grantees only granted settlements to people who could prove they would live on and develop it. In 1800, John James Audubon set out from Bangor to explore what lay beyond New England. On his way north he stopped at Auburn, which he called "The meadow of life." After staying for several weeks at the inn run by Mrs. Saunders (now known as the State House), Audubon returned to Bangor and started planning his journey eastward again. In 1801, when Maine Territory was organized into counties, Auburn received a section from Cumberland County. At that time it consisted of only about four square miles (10 km²). By 1821-22, when new maps were created based on Congressional boundaries changes made during the war between North America and Europe over control of Canada's Saint Lawrence River basin—a conflict known as The War of 1812—Auburn had grown to 8 square miles (20 km²). In 1830-31 Gouverneur Morris visited Auburn while campaigning for election as governor of New York; he found it "an excellent village" with "fine houses," although its population then numbered only 40 or 50 people overall due to wagon travel across open country until shops opened up closer to townspeople instead of leaving them all behind in remote areas like this one did back then! Morris also noted that: "This good place must have been founded by some good people whose hearts are warm with philanthropy." He gave $1,000 each to three residents in order for them build a school house; two construction workers were chosen but died before completing their work due to yellow fever which struck much nearer home than where they lived! On October 5th 1861 during American Civil War Battle Of Gettysburg Union Major General Jubal Early announced that Confederate Lieutenant Colonel William Tilton had surrendered at Little Round Top just south of what is now downtown Auburn; this event ended any hope Confederate remnants may have still had that afternoon trying escape northeast through Pennsylvania towards points north before being trapped near Mechanicsville under heavy Union artillery fire!
