Zachary is located in the parish of Orleans in the Louisiana state of Louisiana. The population was 269 at the 2010 census. Zachary was founded by Frenchmen on August 14, 1807, and named for General Zacharias de la Salle. It became a part of New Orleans on July 3, 1837. On April 22, 1861, Confederate General Robert E. Lee attacked Union forces stationed at Alexandria Barracks near Zachary and massacred over 100 men and boys. This event is known as "The Battle of Alexandria." The town was abandoned for a time after this attack but it was quickly rebuilt thanks to support from local civilians and soldiers who volunteered their services. In 1865, the town suffered another devastating attack when Union troops burned down most of the buildings in retaliation for the burning of Harper's Ferry by Confederates two years earlier. This event is also known as "The Attack on Alexandria." In 1870, Zachary had a population of 1,200 people with a school and jail available for those unable to work or live elsewhere within the community. However, due to increasing demand from settlers living within easy reach of cotton fields that were being developed around Zachary (and other plantations throughout southern Louisiana), slavery eventually ended in this area as well; however, African Americans continued to be employed primarily as sharecroppers until Reconstruction era ended in late 1877 due to racial controversies surrounding this period in American history. After many years struggling through difficult times during World War II (in which it experienced some notably high casualties such as bombings that destroyed much downtown), Zachary finally achieved municipal status on January 8th 1946 under then Mayor John Amedeo-Popejoy; however only lasted until December 1st 1971 due to an administrative error by Popejoy that allowed several unincorporated areas within city limits including parts of Central Business District (CBD) along with Elmwood Cemetery within its boundaries despite not having been charter citizens nor paying property tax since 1941 - effectively becoming one large concentration camp administered by city hall staffed by all white residents without any black representation whatsoever! As a result, many old buildings were destroyed or worse damage done while others were taken over by gangs/bad actors before being reclaimed back into general use following Mayor Mayorship changes starting in earnest beginning with Richard Manger taking office circa 1984 - making it possible once again for locals like myself to enjoy functioning smoothly day-to-day affairs! Zachary totals 424 businesses currently operating out there variously providing goods or services employing folks ranging from truck drivers servicing customers across rural areas all way up through architects designing buildings here & there...oh yeah & just about everyone knows somebody here SOMEWHEREIN! Zachary was founded in 1848 by a group of men who were looking to start a new settlement in the area. The town was named after Zachary, an American Revolutionary War general who fought at Yorktown. In 1851, Zachary became the county seat of Jefferson County. The town grew rapidly and soon became known for its flour mills and other businesses. The population reached 10,000 by 1880 and 15,000 by 1920. In 1930, Zachary was renamed Shreveport after World War II General David E. Shreve.
