In 1892, A.P. Hill donated land for a public school which became known as Zachary High School today. In 1931, Community College of Louisiana moved its operations from Winnsboro in Livingston Parish to Zachary after years of deliberation over whether or not it would be possible to build a college there within commuting distance for students from all over parish and state alike. There has been much growth since then with businesses such as restaurants, medical offices, churches and other institutions relocated here or opened up shop nearby while also providing opportunities for local artisanship and entrepreneurship through cottage industries that have thrived since day one! The community was named after Zacharie, an officer in the French military who fought against the British during the Seven Years' War. After France's defeat at the hands of Britain, Zacharie and his men arrived in what is now Baton Rouge to found a new colony. He and his men were successful in establishing a thriving trade with Spanish Louisiana and developed one of the most important cotton plantations in America. In 1803, Zacharie was elected president of Louisiana and he remains one of its most influential figures today. During Hurricane Katrina, Zachary did everything he could to help survivors and damage avoided or repaired many infrastructure items such as bridges, roads, schools, hospitals, water systems, etc. Unfortunately, much damage occurred due to Hurricane Katrina leading to many death and injury estimates around 100%. With total damages reaching $190 million dollars ($140 million USD), it is clear that Zachary played an extremely important role during this time period both before and after Katrina.
