Westwego, Louisiana is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 7,815 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Bogalusa Micropolitan Statistical Area. Westwego is located on the east bank of the Mississippi River and straddles it midway between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. The area that would become Westwego was first settled by French colonists in 1699. In 1765, General Robert Livingston purchased land from the Chickasaw Nation in what is now Westwego Township. In 1802, an act of Congress designated what are now parts of Jefferson and Lafitte parishes as part of Rapides Parish through which they were drained. The parish seat moved to Natchitoches in 1837 due to a political split in Rapides Parish over whether to annex into larger Jefferson Parish or keep its own government. In 1853, Westwego Township was organized as a new entity within Rapides Parish; it became an independent parish on November 1, 1865 when Lafitte County was created from portions of Alexandrean and Plaquemines Parishes On February 15, 1907 (due to a land donation from John Fenton), all but one mile (two kilometers) of present-day west side streets withinwest wego were rerouted onto State Road 10 as part of Belle Chasse Boulevard project known as "The Boulevardization Movement". The boulevard's original name reflected its intended purpose - connecting BelleChasse with western neighborhoods near downtown New Orleans - but today most traffic encounters only eastern streets gutted for expressways during the heyday of commuter shopping malls adjacent Interstate 10 southbound exit 4A/I-10 northbound exit 5A/I-10 eastbound interchange 6A (now I-10 exit 8).

Westwego is a town in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 3,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge metropolitan area. The name "Westwego" comes from a Choctaw word meaning "place where the water flows." In 1818, Father Jacques Conte and his vanguard of Jesuits explored Westwego Bayou and found it to be navigable for boats. The first post office in Westwego was chartered on November 12, 1824 by General James Wilkinson with Wm. Ladd as postmaster. The town was laid out in 1829 by John Pemberton under the direction of Governor Andrew Jackson. The first store opened in 1830 on Main Street between renamed Jefferson Boulevard and Capitol Avenue (now US 67). A sawmill started production in 1830 and continued until 1854; it produced lumber for buildings such as the State Capitol building and later for other structures including Stroud's Catholic Church (1911), which still stands today across from the original Post Office building on Broadway near Third Street. In 1836, writer Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote about life in Westwego bayou during a visit to Lafitte Island: "I can remember going down there one summer afternoon when everything seemed so fresh--theCanal Road below us seeming like a blue ribbon cutting through green forest; above us an endless skyazened horizon--and then coming up again into this cleanliness and openness that must come only from hard work cleaningsewage systems pumped out daily by menial slaves...the steamboats coming upstream laden with saltpeter right up to our levees...There seemed no end to it all save one--this great seething mass of humanity disgorging its product into that infinite blue abyss."
