The history of the navy in Westwego, Louisiana dates back to 1827. The first ship built for the navy in this area was the USS Constitution which sailed from New Orleans on April 10, 1827. The USS Constitution served until May 30, 1829 when she was decommissioned and sold to a privateer. On October 16, 1830, the USS Constitution again served as a flagship of Commodore John D. Sloat during the Invasion of Cuba. In 1840, Rear Admiral Amos Kendall replaced Commodore John D. Sloat as Commandant of Naval Forces District 6B located in Lafourche Parish. In 1850 Rear Admiral James Fenton assumed command of Naval Forces District 6B and moved naval forces to Westwego Bayou on November 1st following an outbreak of yellow fever in Havana, Cuba. This event marked the beginning ofdriftwooden warships being used by the Navy for operations outside United States waters). On December 15th 1861 Rear Admiral Augustus Kelley took over control of Naval Forces District 6B from Rear Admiral James Fenton and continued its driftwooden predecessor’s work at Westwego Bayou until February 1862 when he pulled all boats out and transferred them to Baton Rouge Harbor where they were put into service under Vice President Abraham Lincoln’s order #813 dated January 20th 1862 which authorized President Abraham Lincoln to use American vessels for military purposes only within Confederate waters (the Mississippi River watershed). In 1865 there were only three active ships serving with Naval Forces District 6B- one at Baton Rouge Harbor and two at Westwego Bayou; these ships being honorably decommissioned on November 3rd 1865 after serving their full tour between 1864-1865 during which time they underwent repairs at Baton Rouge Harbor while also receiving new armament such as cannons and mortars from Ulysses S Grant’s Treasury Department) . Westwego is a small town in Hancock County, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was established in 1836 by African Americans who had migrated from adjacent Jefferson Parish. The first post office was founded in 1837 and the first store opened in 1840. Westwego's initial growth was due to its strategic location on the Mississippi River: it became an important port for goods coming downriver from New Orleans and other cities. In 1853, Westwego incorporated as a municipality; it would remain an unincorporated community until 1955. Westwego is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 2,853 at the 2010 census. Westwego is named after one of the two founders of New Orleans, Pierre-Jacques La Salle and his brother Jean Lafitte. The first people to live in what is now Westwego were the Caddo Indians. They arrived in 1697 and called it "Kwa," meaning "place where water flows." In 1805, General Andrew Jackson and his army moved through this area while on their way to victory over Mexico at Buena Vista Creek. The troops encampment near present-day Westwego served as headquarters for several days before leaving. In 1814, General James K. Polk along with Colonel George Armstrong Custer marched through this area during their invasion of Mexico. As they approached the town of Westwego, they noticed that there was no fence around the village and decided to camp near it instead. When night fell, they discovered that some 400 Mexican soldiers had been stationed around the village and were ready to fight if needed! When news reached Congress about Polk’s Invasion of Mexico, President James K. Polk ordered General Zachary Taylor to build a wall along the US-Mexico border to protect American citizens from attack by Mexicans! The construction began on October 3rd 1846 but only ended up lasting for about three months due to bad weather conditions! It wasn't until after America's victory over Mexican forces at Churubusco that Americans started calling Westwego "The City of Destiny" because they believed that westward migration would be encouraged by this event! Westwego’s main shopping center still stands today - known as “The Plaza” - which has been home to many local businesses since its opening in 1959. Today also marks a significant anniversary for bothWestwego Village Historical Museum (opened May 1st 1899) and Little Rock National Historic Site (opened November 4th 1860). This site preserves many important Arkansas artifacts including an oil wellhead dating back to 1859!
