Westwego is a small town in Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,552 at the 2000 census. It is located in Rapides Parish. The name Westwego comes from the French word "west" meaning "east" and "weg" meaning path or way. The first settler in what is now Westwego was Mme. Jean Lafitte, who arrived on a ship from France in 1821. She built a cabin near the present day intersection of Utopia Lane and Thibodaux Road. She also founded the parish of Thibodaux, which included parts of today's Rapides Parish. In 1836, when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, much of southwestern Louisiana was affected including Westwego where most homes were destroyed or badly damaged by the storm surgewaters that flooded many neighborhoods for weeks afterwards. Many people who lost their homes andproperty rebuilt soon after but cultural changes took time to take hold in this new community post-Katrina as well as within it own borders There are still some remnants of Lafitte's old plantation style architecture throughout town such as her old home on Thibodaux Road now used as apartments/condos and an annex known as Lafitte Manor which has been converted into office space inside with views towards Westwego Creek which runs through town center

Westwego is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 8,639 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now Westwego were French colonists who arrived in 1718 and created a small village on the banks of the Mississippi River. In 1802, a tract of land east of present-day Westwego was purchased by Colonel James Wilkinson from the Choctaw Nation for $5,000. Wilkinson began to build a house here and named it after his birthplace in Wiltshire, England: Westwode House. The town's first store opened in 1824, and its first post office was established on December 12th that year. In 1835, St. Landry Parish merged with Jefferson Parish to form New Orleans County and Westwego became part of that new parish; however, it continued to be known as "Westwego". On October 4th 1870, during Hurricane Camille (National Hurricane Data File), damage caused by wind gusts up to 100 mph (160 km/h) reached parts of Lafitte City which included parts of Westwego including stores along Canal Street and Third Avenue; all but one store were destroyed or damaged beyond repair. That storm also caused extensive flooding across Lafitte City (see map). In 1916–17 General Pershing ordered all American forces out of World War I except for 746 troops stationed at Fort Sumter in South Carolina because he felt they would not fight if their country did not have an army; this order led to calls for President Woodrow Wilson's impeachment because it violated the Neutrality Act which prohibited Americans from entering any war without written authorization from Congress. On September 11th 1918Pershing issued orders authorizing military operations against Germany consequent upon declarations made by German Kaiser Wilhelm II following victory over Russia at Ypres; these orders resulted in widespread destruction throughout Central America as well as widespread fires throughout Europe due to unrestricted munitions shipments authorized by Washington since WWI ended four days earlier under terms set forth in Treaty of Versailles relative to Austria-Hungary having been forced into an alliance with Serbia while Czechoslovakia remained neutral (& other nations). A local grocery store was open when I walked into it today! What an amazing find!
