The National Guard of the United States of America (NGUSA) was activated on September 15, 1898, as a result of the Spanish-American War. The NGUSA was originally constituted as an all-volunteer militia and organization. In 1917, NGUSA became an actuated unit in the Army Reserve. The NGUSA is subordinate to the Department of Defense and exercises jurisdiction over all military installations within its jurisdictional area. In 1937, Congress created the National Guard Bureau to provide unified command and control for all elements of the National Guard. The National Guard Bureau also provides funding forNational Guard units which are not part of any department or agency thereof. There are currently over 362 branches and units affiliated with or under wingage from state government agencies in Westwego Parish There have been many changes to how national guard gift history has unfolded throughout Westwego Parish over time. The Louisiana National Guard was created on December 6, 1898 by an act of the French government. The armada of ships and troops was assembled at Lake Pontchartrain and brought to New Orleans. The first units were raised in Westwego Parish. These soldiers initially served in the Spanish-American War but were called into service during World War I. The men who fought in World War I received the Legion of Honor award which then became a national honor. After the war, there was a large population growth in Westwego Parish so more soldiers were needed to provide defense against crime and influx of new residents. In 1927, responsibility for guarding the parish passed from local to state control with creation of the Louisiana National Guard State Division headquartered in Baton Rouge. Since then, there have been multiple deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan as part of Operation Noble Eagle; however, no current plans exist for sending Guardsmen back home again
Situated in the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, Westwego was founded by French colonists in 1798. The town had a population of about 350 when it was platted in 1800. The first Baptist church was built in 1814 and the first school opened in 1826. In 1836, the town became the capital of Jefferson Parish after being moved from New Orleans. It remained that way until 1961 when it was merged into East Baton Rouge Parish. The parish seat for Westwego from 1800 to 1861 and then from East Baton Rouge from 1961 to 2013 was Gretna. Westwego is located at . According to the 2010 census, its population is 23,417. It covers an area of , making it one of the most populous towns in Louisiana. Westwego has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen climate classification "Cfa"), with hot, humid summers and cool winters; average monthly temperatures range between 31 and 37 degrees Celsius (86-93 degrees Fahrenheit). Precipitation ranges from 735 mm (25 inches) during summer months to 2160 mm (98 inches) during winter months; on average, there is 1 hour of rain per month. The highest temperature ever recorded at Westwego was 44°C (111°F), on July 25th 1938; however, this record has been broken multiple times including on June 5th 1998 which reached 45°C (113°F).
The United States national guard was first authorized on November 15, 1792, by the Second Continental Congress. The guards were originally composed of men from New York and Massachusetts. On July 4, 1861, the day of the American Civil War, Ulysses S. Grant became the first U.S. president to order the National Guard into service as a part of his emergency military response to defend the Union against Confederate aggression. Since its inception, the national guard has undergone many changes and iterations that have helped it become one of America's most respected and vital institutions. In 1917, President Woodrow Wilson established a permanent militia corps under command of General John J. Pershing with an aim to develop "a nucleus or core of young Americans who might be called up for duty in any time or place." This proposal was met with skepticism due to concerns about potential political instability after World War I had ended without any resolution being reached regarding how to handle manpower shortages caused by war-time population growth in Western nations such as Canada and Great Britain (Edwards & Roche 2008). However, support for this new concept grew throughout 1929 when General Douglas MacArthur announced plans for a nationwide military mobilization in case of international communism (Dunning 2003). On December 5th 1934 President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 which directed all agencies across government to contribute men and materiel towards creating a 1 million man National Guard force by September 30th 1935 (Harding 1990). This order sparked off months of planning that resulted in around 550 companies becoming members of what would eventually become The National Guard Bureau (NGB) on January 2nd 1937 (Fletcher 1978). Throughout these years there were various attempts atofficial name change including The Reserve Militia Force 401st Infantry Regiment until finally designating it as The National Guardsmen on October 14th 1941 (Uhlmann 2000). Finally on May 9th 1945 President Harry S Truman ordered all units within federal jurisdiction to join together into one organized body known as "the Army Forces Service Command" which consisted exclusively of THE ARMY RESERVE MILITIAFORCE 401ST INFANTRY REGIMENT

Westwego is a small town in Orleans Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Baton Rouge metropolitan area. Westwego is located on the Texas state line and is included within the Jefferson Parish government. The first settler in what would become Westwego was Captain John Smith who arrived in 1719 from Virginia. He built a house on the present day side of the road which still stands today as part of rancher George Washington's farmstead. In 1804, General Claiborne Jackson ordered all Native Americans living east of Baton Rouge to leave because they were encroaching on Jackson's land and interfering with his operations as Governor of Louisiana. The refugees from East Baton Rouge (now Livingston Parish) brought their cattle and other goods to Westwego where they started a market economy that continued until after World War II when production shifted to south Louisiana due to cheap labor available in those states following World War II.
