In 1812, Westwego was the most northerly parish in Louisiana. It was formed from a part of Plaquemines Parish east of the Iberia River. The area that became Westwego was long known for its fertile farmland and swampy areas. The parish's nickname, "The Prairie Parish", is still used today to describe the area around Westwego. Westwego first came into being as a result of an agreement between France and Spain in 1762. The two countries ceded much of what is now Louisiana to France in order to gain control over the Mississippi River Valley. In 1800, parts of Plaquemines and St. Tammany parishes were combined with Westwego to form another parish called Jefferson Parish. In 1812, when Napoleon Bonaparte took power in France, he decided to expand his Empire by taking possession of additional territories in North America including Louisiana. He appointed General James Wilkinson as governor of Louisiana on November 3, 1812, and Wilkinson began planning the construction of a road from New Orleans northward through Acadiana (now Texas) and then on to Baton Rouge before finallyreachingthe Mississippi River at Bayou Lafourche. At this time there were no roads within present day Orleans Parish so Wilkinson had to travel downriver on a riverboat until he reached Baton Rouge where he disembarked and walked miles inland before finally reaching town proper on January 8, 1813. Baton Rouge was founded by French colonists who named it after Louis XVIII of France because it was near his original home base at Toulouse-Lautrec Castle which he had returned briefly to upon his return from exile in England following the Napoleonic Wars (1815-1819). The town of Westwego was founded in 1839 by the steamboat captain John Baptist White. The town rapidly grew, becoming a center for cotton and other agricultural production. In 1845, Westwego became a parish within the Orleans Parish government. In 1861, the parish was disbanded and its lands divided among several other parishes. In 1933, Westwego incorporated as a city. The city's motto is "Proud to be Louisiana."
