West Monroe is located on the southern bank of the Iberia River and its main shopping districts are located on the eastern side of the river which is bordered by Tulane University to its north and east, West Monroe High School to its south, and Interstate 10 to its west. The first people who lived in what became West Monroe were Native American slaves brought over by French colonists as part of their effort to build a road between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. West Monroe is a small town in Rapides Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie Micropolitan Statistical Area. The village of West Monroe was founded in 1846 by Shadrach Wright and his family. In 1863, General Pemberton's army besieged and captured West Monroe during the American Civil War. In 1881, James A. Hinton donated 320 acres (12 km2) to be used as a township for all residents of Rapides Parish with equal voting rights regardless of race or sex. On November 3, 1886, voters approved incorporation as a municipality with a council-manager government under the name "West Monroe." In 1901 it became an unincorporated community located within Rapides Parish proper. In 1928, West Monroe annexed neighboring Village of East Crowley which had been separately incorporated as Village of Crowley on January 1 that year. In 1938 it annexe
West Monroe was founded by the French in 1763 as a trading post on the Mississippi River. The town developed into a small, thriving community and soon became known for its tobacco products. The town was also known for its natural resources, including lumber, coal, and oil. In 1849, West Monroe became the capital of Louisiana after Baton Rouge was moved from New Orleans to central Louisiana. The city grew quickly due to its strategic location on the river and its access to markets in both New Orleans and Mobile. By 1870, West Monroe had become one of the most populous cities in Louisiana. During World War II, West Monroe played an important role in providing food and munitions to Allied forces fighting in Europe. After the war ended, the city experienced growth as a result of new development along the riverfront.
