West Monroe, Louisiana is a small town located in the parish of Livingston in south-central Louisiana. The population was 3,835 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of West Monroe Parish and lies along Interstate 10 on the border of Jefferson and Orleans counties. The community began as a French settlement in 1802, when General Andrew Jackson invaded Louisiana and drove out the French. The United States acquired land east of New Orleans from France in 1803, and by 1830 it had become part of Jefferson County. In 1836, East Baton Rouge Parish was established to include what were then western Livingston Parish and eastward to near Thibodaux; West Monroe remained part of Lafourche Parish until 1861. In 1872, a post office was established at West Monroe with A.F. Beaumont as its first occupant; he served until his death in 1905. By 1900, there were only three families living there—the Post Office Administration moved to Bastrop later that year—and by 1910 there were just 24 residents remaining. However, due to increasing agricultural production and lack of available water resources for irrigation purposes, farming became an important industry in West Monroe over time. Cotton became one of the most important crops grown here; however, even today cotton production remains a minor aspect of the local economy compared to other types of businesses or services that have flourished here since then such as health care and education sectors which have seen significant growth thanks to advances in technology and financing methods since then (See also: "When did West Monroe turn into an agriculture powerhouse?"). Today's primary industry comes from providing essential services like road maintenance etc., but some older businesses are still active including a bank (First National Bank), dry goods store (Goudreau's), auto parts store (Chambers Bros.), grocery store (Erickson's), convenience store (Powell's) as well as several churches including First Baptist Church which has been serving the community since 1907.

The town of West Monroe, Louisiana was founded by the French in 1762. The area that is now West Monroe was originally part of what is today New Orleans. In 1802, the town was renamed for General Andrew Jackson, who had been elected president that year. The town developed rapidly due to its location on the Mississippi River and its role as a trade center. The population of West Monroe increased from about 2,500 in 1800 to more than 10,000 by 1830. In 1836, a group of United States soldiers under General Robert E Lee attacked and burned down the town during their attempt to drive out the British forces occupying Louisiana at that time. Many residents were killed or captured and many buildings were destroyed. However, this event helped spur development in the town and it became one of the most thriving towns in Louisiana during its early years. The influx of new settlers during Reconstruction period madeWest Monroe even more lively and prosperous than it had been before. Businesses prospered thanks to an increase in transportation links with other parts of Louisiana as well as nearby states such as Texas and Arkansas. The population peaked at around 30,000 in 1920 but declined thereafter due to social unrest associated with World War I and subsequent economic decline. However, despite this decline, West Monroe still experienced significant growth over the next several decades until it officially lost its city status in 1974 following a series of dramatic demographic changes across much of southern Louisiana which impacted local government organizations and services essential to life within society
In 1813, the United States acquired Louisiana from France. The area was known as the "New Orleans Purchase." In 1815, President James K. Polk approved a bill to rename the territory of Louisiana after General Andrew Jackson. Jackson signed the bill into law on December 6, 1815.
