This Airliner is still used today for these purposes. In 1992, another Boeing 737 Airliner was donated by Northwest Airlines to be used for various humanitarian functions within the community such as providing clean water or energy assistance to families living without access to those services. This Airliner is now being stored at George Hines Regional Airport pending donation by another airline. West Monroe is a city in the parish of West Monroe, Louisiana, United States. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Bossier City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The land that makes up today's west Monroe was first settled by French colonists in 1699 as Iberia Parish. A post office called West Monroe was established in 1824, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. In 1836, General John C. Pemberton decided to move the military headquarters from New Orleans to what is now Baton Rouge because of concerns about Indian attacks on settlers near Baton Rouge and his need for troops to protect settlers against Native Americans who were terrorizing them. When he arrived at what is now West Monroe on November 21, 1836, he found that most of the town had burned down due to Indians raiding it while supplies were stored inside FortMarchant nearby. The only thing remaining from when West Monroe was founded were some buildings on a small island in Lake Pontchartrain which became known as "The Island". On January 8, 1840 Isaac Stevens donated land east of present-day Interstate 10 between Canal Saint Louis and Hammonds Court for a new community called "Blanchardstown". The name came from Stonewall Jackson's daughter Blanche (née Henderson). On July 9th 1865 a party led by Colgate Cottonwood voyagered ashore from USS Constitution during Hurricane Andrew and landed at what is now Higgins Street just south ofpresent-day US Highway 90A . They built a cabin there which served as their home until 1898 when they sold it to Jules Blanchette who renamed it "West Monroe" after himself! Held every year since then (July 9th), Hurricane Andrew Day celebrates this event with activities such aspiloting boats along the Intracoastal Waterway or visiting local businesses and eateries closed for business but open for inspection! On July 9th each year many locals gather at Higgins Street Park across from US 90A where they have fun playing frisbee or BBQing before enjoying live music throughout the day by local bands! In recent years events have also been held at various locations around town like East Lakefront Stadium which has hosted high school football games throughout its history! During both WORLD WAR II (1939-1945) and THE SANDSTORM (1966-1968), West Monroe was one of several strategic cities within range of Confederate forces during their attempt to hold onto occupied Louisiana after THE CIVIL WAR ended. Finally, following Hurricane Katrina's landfall in 2005, West Monroe has begun to attract attention from developers interested in developing adjacent properties into luxury housing developments or commercial corridors dubbed "The New Orleans Experience."
The area now known as West Monroe was one of the most rural in the state of Louisiana. The land was first settled by the Creoles, a slave-owning group from Haiti. In 1812, after the American Revolution, France ceded Louisiana to Great Britain as part of the Treaty of Paris. In 1814, President James K. Polk awarded East Baton Rouge Parish to West Monroe Parish in order to create a contiguous parish.
