Thibodaux also experienced some harsh times during World War II. On October 5th 1941, Japanese bombers bombed the town killing more than 60 people including many children who were playing near the burning buildings. The bombing continued for several hours after they had finished their raids and left extensive damage to residential areas as well as businesses downtown which remain all that remain standing today.

Many old local businesses still stand today including an auto dealership, two churches, a grocery store,educational institutions such as Tulane University and LSU Tigers football games as well as many small shops catering to specific industries like plumbing supplies or used books.
