Thibodaux, Louisiana is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The population was 5,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Bogalusa Metropolitan Statistical Area. Thibodaux is located on the Gulf Coast about 16 miles south of New Orleans and 18 miles north of Baton Rouge. The first settlements in what is now Thibodaux were made by French colonists during the 17th century. The original name of the town was Burgundyville, which was changed to Thibodaux in 1797 after a battle between British and French forces. In 1815, Lafitte's men burned down many buildings in Thibodaux in order to remove all evidence that they had participated in the Battle of Lake Pontchartrain two days earlier. In 1846, Joseph Barthélemy founded an cotton plantation near Thibodaux which became known as Barthélemy Plantation No. 2. The town's post office was established at this location on October 4, 1847.
