The Marine Corps Deployed Gift History program has been a tradition in the Thibodaux, LA community for more than 50 years. The program is designed to provide support to Marines and their families during deployments. The Marines in the Thibodaux community have contributed tremendously to our town by providing service and donating goods and services. The gift history program began with a donation of cigarettes by Maj. John Haggerty, who served with the 1st Battalion, 8th Marines from 1974-1976. Since then, many donations have come from members of the community who serve or have served with the Marine Corps. Some examples include: an electronic warfare system from Sgt. First Class Jeremy Wittrock (2007-2008), coffee filters from Lance Cpl., Cody Pogue (2009-2010), T-shirts and caps from Sgt. 2nd Class Tim Gentry (2011-2012), games for children from Master Sgt., Jeffery Mayo (2013-2014), radios for Marine athletes from 3rd Lt., Chris Larkin (2015-2016) and 2nd Lt., Micah Fenton (2017). Each donation provides opportunities for local businesses to give back as well as individual marines who are deployed or stationed in Thibodaux at any time during their tour of duty! In 2017, proceeds benefited Veterans Affairs Medical Center through Operation Smile which focused on giving free dental care to military veteran patients at VAMC’s clinics around Louisiana!

The Marines of the 1st Marine Division deployed in Thibodaux, Louisiana in 1945. The unit disembarked at Marseilles on November 15th and arrived in Louisiana four days later. They were consolidated with the 2nd Marine Division on December 3rd. The division was assigned to III Corps which was then under Army command. On January 6th 1946, the division left I Corps to move to III Corps area and join up with General Douglas MacArthur’s Eighth Army. The Marines fought alongside General John A. Patton’s army as it advanced through Germany and Austria during World War II. On May 8th 1946, they departed III Corps area for Okinawa where they served until September 1945 when they returned home.
Thibodaux is a town located in Rapides Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 7,539 at the 2010 census. It is the largest community in Rapides Parish and home to the Thibodaux-Lafayette Airport. The first European settlers arrived in what is now Thibodaux in 1802. The area became part of Spanish Louisiana after France ceded it to Spain in 1763. In 1812, Adams and Jefferson were elected president of the United States and choosing not to defend their borders against Mexico led them to sign a Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo that divided American territories between Mexico and America. As part of this agreement, Thibodaux became a part of Mexico City until it regained its independence as Louisiana on January 9th, 1861. When World War I began on April 6th, 1914 with Austria-Hungary invading Serbia, most Americans were unaware that their country was also involved due to censorship by the US government which deemed any military activity as “ neutrality” while Europe went into war. On October 14th year 1915 an Austrian tank column invaded Serbian towns near Ljubljana along with artillery support from Hungary beforewading through the Danube River into Serbia proper advancing towards Belgrade where they encountered heavy resistance including 5 days of street fighting before withdrawing back across the river successfully without loss or injury to their tanks or infantry who had continued forward unsupported during these so called “miraculous” events taking place far from any combat zones. This event helped lead to increased recruitment for both Russia’s Red Army and Italy’s Fascist regime as countries exhausted all other forms of opposition within their borders during World War I

Thibodaux, Louisiana is a small town located in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana. The population as of 2010 was 6,609. It is the seat of Thibodaux Parish and home to the Lafitte Museum. Thibodaux was founded by French settlers in 1718 and became a parish in 1806. The original courthouse was built in 1824 and burned down in 1865. The current courthouse was completed in 1936 and serves as the seat of government for Thibodaux Parish.
Thibodaux was founded in 1762 by the French as Thibault. The community grew rapidly and by 1800, it boasted a population of over 1,000 people. In 1802, the Orleans Parish Improvement District was created and Thibodaux became part of its boundaries. In 1848, Thibodaux joined the newly formed state of Louisiana and it has been a part of that state ever since. The city is located on the banks of the Mississippi River and is known for its numerous cotton plantations and rice fields.
