The post office was established in 1868. The history of Thibodaux goes back to 1798 when two Frenchmen named Lafitte and Bonnet first set foot on American soil. They were looking for new land to settle after their failed attempt to establish a colony in Mobile Bayous south of Baton Rouge. Lafitte's efforts led him and his men into the marshes near Thibodaux where they built the first permanent French settlement in what became known as Thibodeaux Parish. It was here that they began trading with Native Americans, conducting trade missions across the bayous until they finally founded a colony named Fort de Chartres on Rangeline Island near modern-day Metairie, Louisiana on November 16, 1798 under the leadership of Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de La Salle. In 1800ad Ville Marie (later renamed New Orleans) formed from Lake Pontchartrain following an altercation between General James Kenedy and Rear Admiral Pierre Charles Toulouse Lesseps over control ofparish land northwest of downtown New Orleans
