The first permanent European settlers in what became Sulphur were families from Acadia who arrived in 1718. They built small cabins on the edge of present day Sulphur Bayou, just east of present day downtown Sulphur. In 1784, General James Wilkinson erected a battery to protect shipping along the coast against French pirates. This battery became known as Wilkinson's Folly because it was abandoned after only six months and only made minimal use because there were no threats from piracy then or since. The first post office was established at present day Sulphur in 1809 by commissioners appointed by Governor Claiborne Jackson to serve all parts of the state including New Orleans westward across Lake Pontchartrain through what is now Stroudsburg Township into Baton Rouge County; this office continued until 1832 when it was discontinued at Baton Rouge due to lack thereof an act by Congress recognizing new parishes within that county - leavingBATON ROUGE with twenty-six municipalities served by one postoffice each!
