The Navy has a long and diverse history in Sulphur, Louisiana. The USS Constitution (1795-1865) was the first ship of the United States navy to be built in the state. The USS Monitor (1864-1865) was also built here. The first naval base on Sulphur Island was established at Chalmette in 1814. In 1840, the Navy moved its headquarters from New Orleans to Mobile, Alabama. After American victory over Mexico at Palo Alto on November 6, 1846, Commodore Benjamin Farragut ordered Rear Admiral John D. Stockton to establish a naval station at Red Bayou on Sulphur Island as part of Operation Neptune’s Spear. On December 12th, 1846 Commodore Farragut transferred command of Red Bayou Naval Station from Stockton to Rear Admiral David Dixon Porterfield. This move set the stage for America’s longest period of uninterrupted military occupation in Africa since slavery ended there eighty years earlier! From 1893 until 1917, the US Navys largest shipyard and factory complex was located on Sulphur Island; it produced ships for both World War I and World War II. During this time many local people made their homes ashore including Mayor LaFontaine who served continuously until his death in 1942; Coast Guard Captain Dudley Jethro Gibbs who stayed ashore during one entire year when he led an exercise off shore; First Lady Lillian Bush who lived aboard HMAS Melbourne during her visit to Louisiana in 1926; and many more local citizens who played important roles in navy construction and operations here throughout its history! Sulphur is also home to two other significant warships: USS Enterprise (CVN 64) which arrived here after being brought overland from Japan by way of Korea City on October 3rd 1945 and later decommissioned after serving as flagship for Commander Fifth Fleet during May 1951 Gulf War exercises off Kuwait; and USS Macon (CVA 66) which arrived here following displacement of CSS Alabama from Mobile Bay on February 15th 1945 while under construction at Norfolk Shipbuilding Corporation’s Elizabeth River Yard using tactics developed by Lieutenant Colonel James Ketchum Jr., USMC commanding officer of Task Force 58A during WWII making her ultimatelythe world’s first guided missile destroyer! These two vessels have been instrumental in helping preserve Gulf shipping routes today while performing coast guard duties along our coastline!

Sulphur, Louisiana is a small town located in the parish of Livingston in south-central Louisiana. The population was 4,853 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Arkansas River within the Shreveport metropolitan area. Sulphur's economy is based on agriculture and manufacturing. The first humans to live in Sulphur were Native American students from St. Louis who came here for school during the 1830s. A store and post office were established in 1835, but it failed to take off because there was no market for goods produced in what was then a wilderness area. In 1838, John Sibley built a cabin here after migrating from Illinois as part of his attempt to find new land where white people could live without fear of Indian attacks or being kidnapped by their rivals. He named his cabin "Sulfur" after an ore he had found near Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin Territory (now Rockwall County, Texas). In 1841, Captain James Fenton discovered oil shale under Sulphur Creek while exploration for oil rigs near present day Decatur and this led to the beginning of oil production in Sulphur Parish. The first rig to be drilled here was called Fenton well No 1 which reached its depth on April 12, 1941 when it became one of America's first offshore wells with production starting that same year at $2 per barrel according to BP reports at that time! The early years of commercial production were difficult due to environmental challenges including water scarcity and too high a cost per barrel brought about by technology advancements at that time such as horizontal drilling which made it possible to extract more oil than ever before from these difficult-to-reach areas! In 1969, ExxonMobil donated land adjacent to their refinery for use as an open air laboratory; this Laboratory has been used by many universities over the years including LSU Science Center & Gulf Air Research Station (GARS), Tulane University’s NSimpson Physics Institute (NLSPI) & Southern Methodist University’s Kaufman Lab (KaufmanLab) among others! Today GARS continues research into energy storage technologies using carbon capture and storage processes! In 1860, Sulphur had a population of 1,100 and was the seat of government for Lafayette Parish. On October 15, 1886, Sulphur incorporation as an independent city resulted in its becoming the smallest city in Louisiana and one of the most populous cities in the South. The population peaked at almost 20,000 during World War II before declining over the next few decades due to various factors including loss of jobs and increased suburban development.
